Samsung SDI will build large-scale R&D centers in the US, Europe and China. They will be key bases that will help the growth of Samsung SDI's EV batteries. Samsung SDI plans to lead the development of next-generation batteries, including batteries for EV.
On the 15th, Samsung SDI announced that it had established 'SDI R&D America (SDIRA)' in Boston, USA. SDIRA is Samsung SDI's first R&D research facility in the US. Together with US R&D personnel, Samsung SDI will respond to the US EV battery market.
Samsung SDI has research centers in Munich, Germany and Suwon, Gyeonggi. The research center in Munich, SDI R&D Europe (SDIRE), was established on July 1st. Samsung SDI currently has a major manufacturing base for EV batteries in God, Hungary. The Munich Research Center will be responsible in developing Samsung SDI's lithium-ion batteries and next-generation batteries.
Samsung SDI is also planning to establish an R&D research center in China in 2023. Samsung SDI develops high-value EV batteries through R&D centers in the US, Europe and China. Through this, Samsung SDI plans to secure its competitiveness with a significantly differentiating technology.
Samsung SDI plans to cooperate with outstanding universities and startup companies near the EV battery manufacturing base that are active in battery innovation technology and next-generation battery R&D. SDIRE conducts R&D projects with major universities and research institutes that have expertise in battery process and facility R&D.
Samsung SDI expected to secure global talent, and speed up infrastructure construction. The company is concentrating on battery development by investing large-scale R&D expenses. Samsung SDI’s R&D expenditure reached an all-time high of KRW 877.6 billion last year
Last month, Samsung SDI CEO Yoon-ho Choi held the 'Tech & Career Forum' for key executives, including Samsung SDI's head of research center, Hyuk Chang, as well as domestic doctoral-level personnel. He focused his efforts on securing talented personnel to grow into a global battery leader.
CEO Choi said, “The establishment of the global research institutes is to secure the technological competitiveness of differentiating technology, and further strengthen the best quality by utilizing excellent overseas personnel. We will continue to expand our R&D bases by region, starting with the US and Europe.”
