LG Energy Solution, Samsung SDI, and SK innovation, three major battery companies are entering the battery recycling market one after another. Hyundai Motor Group also recently formed a task force (TF) and is giving shape to their battery reuse and recycling business strategy.
SK innovation is actively engaging in R&D to extract various materials by recycling batteries. They are planning to acquire 50 related patents and generate revenue of 300 billion KRW by recycling 30GWh batteries by 2025 with SK on.
LG Energy Solutions acquired a 2.6% stake of Li-Cycle, the largest waste battery recycling company in North America at the end of last year. Li-Cycle will supply 20,000 tons of recycled nickel to LG Energy Solutions for 10 years from 2023. They built 'Charging + Energy Storage System (ESS)' using batteries after electric vehicles were used at the Ochang Plant in North Chungcheong Province in last June.
Samsung Group acquired a 6.33% stake of SungEel HiTech, a battery recycling company, through Samsung C&T, and acquired an additional 11.5% stake in SungEel HiTech last year through Samsung Venture Investment, which is consist of Samsung SDI and others companies.
Hyundai Motor Group is also starting the reuse and recycling business using 'used batteries' for electric vehicles. Through Hyundai Glovis, they will collect used batteries from junkyards and dealerships around the world. It is known that Hyundai Glovis has developed and patented a container that can transport these batteries.
Hyundai Motor Company is conducting a demonstration project to reuse the collected and used batteries as ESS through power logic. In addition, it is known that high-quality batteries among the collected batteries will be remanufactured by Hyundai Mobis and used as refurbished batteries.
