Samsung Display will supply Apple with organic light emitting diode (OLED) displays for their new iPhone 14. It is estimated that 80 million OLEDs will be used for iPhone 14. Samsung Display collaborates with Duksan Neolux, Solus Advanced Materials, and Samsung SDI to mass-produce and supply OLED displays.

According to industry insiders on the 19th, Samsung Display will supply 80 million panels for all iPhone 14 series models, which is scheduled to be released globally in the second half of this year. Mass production and delivery are scheduled to begin in the third quarter of this year.

iPhone 14 is scheduled to be released with four models, two general models, and two pro models. Samsung Display is equipping iPhone 14 and 14 Plus with 6.1-inch, 6.7-inch, and for 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max with 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch OLEDs. 38.17 million panels will be supplied just for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. Samsung Display will supply low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO)-thin film transistor (TFT) based OLEDs with excellent power efficiency and low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS)-thin film transistor (TFT) based OLEDs with high charge transfer and stability to the iPhone 14 series.

Samsung Display is a major supplier to Apple, the world's largest smartphone maker. It started supplying Apple's first OLED smartphone in 2017, and won the largest display volume this year as well. Samsung Display has been selecting material suppliers to supply iPhone 14 with OLEDs since last year. They selected Apple's OLED material supplier 'M12.'. Duksan Neolux, Samsung SDI, and Solus Advanced Materials were also found to have been listed in the M12. Duksan Neolux will be supplying Red Prime and Green Prime, which emit red and green colors. Samsung SDI will supply Green Host, and Solus Advanced Materials will supply A-ETL. Duksan Neolux will also supply HTL, an auxiliary material, in addition to Red Prime and Green Prime.

OLED is a display light-emitting material that emits light by itself. It is composed of a light emitting layer and auxiliary materials, and the combination of materials determines the performance and lifespan of the OLED panel.

Samsung Display is expected to solidify its position in the smartphone OLED market by supplying iPhone 14.

The industry is raising the possibility that BOE has been listed as Apple's OLED panel supplier, but will be excluded from the OLED supplier due to design change problems. Samsung Display, Apple's largest supplier, is expected to benefit if iPhone 14 shipments, which were intended to be allocated to BOE, return to other display customers. Samsung Display is highly likely to take over Apple's BOE shipments ahead of its competitors in display development experience, technology, quality, and supply chain with Apple.

Samsung Display's M12 material makers are also expected to expand their supply of light emitting materials. In the small and medium-sized OLED market, competition between domestic display companies and Chinese companies is fierce. Samsung Display plans to increase its OLED market share this year by expanding its investments in production capacity and by fostering cooperation with domestic material companies.
