LG Display has expanded the number of materials suppliers for next-generation organic light emitting diode (OLED) panel. The deuterium blue light emitting material used in OLED panels for TV was localized in cooperation with LG Chem. It is gaining attention since the material is known for its high technical difficulty.

According to the industry on the 14th, LG Chem has become LG Display's OLED.EX panel material supplier. It was found out that LG Chem has started supplying deuterium blue material to LG Display OLED.EX.

OLED.EX is LG Display's next-generation OLED panel. They have replaced the main component of the panel, hydrogen element, with deuterium. Deuterium blue is a key material that helps OLED.EX to emit light. Blue material emits the brightest light but has a short lifespan. In order to improve this issue, deuterium blue was used by replacing the hydrogen element. Deuterium blue is heavier and more stable than existing blue materials. It can emit the brightest light for a long period of time. Compared to existing OLED materials, the screen brightness (luminance) has been greatly improved.

LG Display has been supplied deuterium blue from DuPont, a U.S. OLED light emitting material company. DuPont is the world's third-largest manufacturer of luminescent materials and is known to have supplied all of deuterium blue to LG Display.

It is the first time that LG Chem has been listed as a supplier of LG Display OLED.EX. LG Chem developed and delivered deuterium blue with LG Display to expand their material business.

In order to stabilize the supply chain of materials to strengthen their position in the OLED TV panel market, LG Display chose materials from LG Chem. LG Chem has been supplying OLED hole layer and light emitting layer materials to LG Display. In OLED, holes and electrons move and emit light in the light emitting layer by combining. LG Chem is expanding the supply scale to the host light emitting layer that enhances luminous efficiency, starting with the core material of the hole layer, the hole transport layer (HTL). In the light emitting material sector, LG Chem recorded 45.5 billion KRW in sales in the first quarter, up 5% from last year.

LG Display is the world's number one company in the market share of OLED for TV. LG Electronics is expanding OLED panel shipments focusing on premium TV products. The number of applications is increasing by expanding the suppliers of OLED.EX, starting with TV in the OLED market. LG Display plans to strengthen their OLED business competitiveness by expanding the supply of materials including deuterium blue.
