SK hynix is starting the mass-production of the industry's highest specification DRAM, high bandwidth memory (HBM)3. SK Hynix will supply 16 gigabytes (GB) HBM3 to Nvidia. The HBM3 can process 819 GB of data per second. This is a speed that can process 163 Full HD movies in 1 second. The process speed is about 80% faster than the previous generation, HBM2E.

SK hynix announced on the 9th that they will start mass production of 16GB HBM3 DRAM in the third quarter, which is made from many DRAMs connected vertically. With cooperation with Nvidia, it will be combined with the new graphic processing unit (GPU) H100 to target the high-speed artificial intelligence (AI) based high-tech market.

HBM3 is the industry's fastest 4th Gen DRAM. It can process data up to 80% faster than the 3rd Gen (HBM2E) product. SK hynix official said, "After 7 months of developing new HBM products, we are able to supply them to customers and open a new chapter in the high-speed AI semiconductor market."

The HBM3 is launched with two capacities, 16 GB and 24 GB. To implement 16GB, SK hynix finely grinded a single DRAM chip to 30 micrometers (㎛) and then vertically connected eight chips with TSV technology. TSV is a technology that connects DRAM chips through thousands of drilled microscopic holes and interconnected with electrodes that vertically penetrate the upper and lower chip holes.

SK hynix plans to mass-produce the HBM3 to take the lead in the memory market. They are targeting global big tech companies with HBM3. SK hynix will apply their products to supercomputers that will enhance the perfection of AI cutting-edge technology.

Jong-won Noh, president of SK hynix (Business Manager), said, “We have secured top-class competitiveness in the premium DRAM market through close cooperation with Nvidia. We will continue with open-cooperation method to find out needs of our customers beforehand, and solve them to become a 'solution provider'."

SK hynix also plans to supply 24GB product to Nvidia within this year.
