Surplus Global, promotion for 12-inch
Next May, prototype consignment production service
Expected to utilize R&D Fab for 'Localization of Small Managers'

SurplusGLOBAL will create R&D production facilities (fab) for semiconductor foundry processes. This is the first time a private company, not a government or research institute, has prepared a foundry R&D fab. It is expected to provide opportunities to fabless companies that cannot produce prototypes due to a lack of foundry fabs. It is also expected that it will be used as a localization testbed for materials, parts, and equipment.

SurplusGLOBAL is building a 12-inch semiconductor R&D production facility in a semiconductor cluster in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. Starting in May next year, it will provide semiconductor equipment manager testing and prototype consignment production services. About KRW 300 billion will be invested in the fab. Yongin fab production is 3,000 sheets per month based on 12-inch wafers. Although it is a small "mini foundry fab" compared to domestic foundry companies, the company explains that it is sufficient for semiconductor prototype production and small equipment testing environment.

Yongin Fab has currently secured clean rooms and has put in semiconductor thin films and deposition equipment. Before next year's operation, semiconductor exposure process equipment will be added to the complete production line. The National Nano Fab Center provided similar services. It provided a semiconductor R&D environment to companies by jointly utilizing semiconductor equipment. As the semiconductor market grows, demand for R&D and prototype production by fabless and small business owners has increased significantly. This also disrupted the production of prototypes.

SurplusGLOBAL entered the business directly after seeing the rapidly increasing demand for semiconductor R&D and prototype production. It not only provides a simple test environment but also provides small foundry services. Accumulating technology and capital also opened the way to challenge the "fifth foundry company."

SurplusGLOBAL is Korea's No.1 used semiconductor equipment distributor and the fab can be efficiently built by utilizing 8-12 inches of various process equipment owned by the company. Experience and know-how in supplying equipment and supporting technology to semiconductor manufacturers such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix can also be fully utilized. Jung-woong Kim, CEO of SurplusGLOBAL, said on the 9th, "As a representative company of semiconductor equipment in Korea, we will seek new business opportunities through investment in foundry R&D fabs in Korea."
