Bringing a significant change in foreign-led market
Following Chinese company, a contract with Samsung Electro-Mechanics
Free from relying on Japan… Reduced production and delivery period

Hanmi SemiconductorCo. is attracting attention by supplying semiconductor equipment that has been successfully developed domestically for the first time. Hanmi Semiconductor revealed a new equipment developed by its own technology to the market, which is receiving attention whether its new equipment is able to fully replace a highly-depended foreign equipments.
Hanmi Semiconductor announced on the 2nd that it had received an order for 'micro SAW & Vision Placement' from Samsung Electro-Mechanics. The contract amount is 4.2 billion won, and supply of the equipment lasts the end of February 2022.
The micro SAW is a device that cuts semiconductors, and the Vision Placement functions to clean, inspect, and sort the cut-semiconductors. Due to the nature of the process, the micro SAW & Vision Placement work as one system.
While Hanmi Semiconductor has developed and supplied Vision Placement on its own for some time, Micro SAW depended on products from DISCO, a Japanese company specializing in the field. However, it has recently attempted a major transformation, which is developing micro SAW domestically. Hanmi Semiconductor announced on the 2nd of last month that it had developed a 'Dual-chuck Saw' for the first time in Korea.
The difference between single and dual chucks is whether single or dual vacuum technology is used when inspecting cut-semiconductors and transferring them to trays. Dual-chuck saw equipment is evaluated as high-performance equipment because it processes a larger amount of semiconductors. Micro SAW is a generic term for equipment that cuts packaged semiconductors.
This is the first time that a domestic micro SAW has been adopted by a domestic company, as the micro SAW developed by Hanmi Semiconductor is supplied to Samsung Electro-Mechanics. In particular, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, the largest semiconductor package substrate company in Korea, seems to have been recognized for the performance of Hanmi Semiconductor's micro SAW equipment.
Hanmi Semiconductor also achieved the result of exporting equipment to China on the 7th of last month. Customers are responding quickly, such as getting an order for the equipment worth 3.35 billion won from Chippacking Technology, a Chinese Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) company.
Hanmi Semiconductor is under the spotlight whether its product will have a full-fledged import substitution effect. Hanmi Semiconductor expects to reduce costs by up to 90 billion won a year by localizing the equipment. In addition, as the uncertainty of procurement of micro SAW has been solved, which had been in short supply, it is expected that Vision Placement will be delivered quickly.
Hanmi Semiconductor took 7-8 months to supply Vision Placement equipment due to the delay in delivery of Japanese micro SAW. However, through this localization of the micro SAW, it was possible to shorten the production period by 3 to 4 months. In addition to increase in profits through localization, it is able to increase sales by shortening delivery duration.
Hanmi Semiconductor also built a designated factory formicro SAW production. Dong-shin Kwak, vice chairman of Hanmi Semiconductor, emphasized at the recent completion ceremony by saying that, “We will be first to respond to the demand of companies such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. We are capable of generating 600 billion won in annual sales.”
Hanmi Semiconductor has set its sales target for this year at 308 billion won. This is a 20% increase from the previous year (252 billion won), which is the highest sales record ever. It is unusual for the company to disclose its annual sales forecast. This is interpreted that Hanmi Semiconductor is confident of the boom in the semiconductor industry and its growth plans.
Hanmi Semiconductor achieved sales of 70.9 billion won in the first quarter. According to SK Securities, the amount that Hanmi Semiconductor received from January to May was 161.2 billion won. It already surpassed the total order amount of 121.9 billion won last year.
