Samsung Electronics has developed 2nd generation IoT platform and applied AP (Application Processor) for IoT for the first time. As IoT platform with higher level of completion appears, industries are focused on whether or not ‘Samsung IoT ecosystem’ will be created.
According to an industry on the 24th, Samsung Electronics’ DS (Device Solution) Sector is going to introduce 2nd generation ARTIK to markets shortly. New AP that is specialized for IoT is applied to 2nd generation ARTIK. Because Exynos, which is for Smartphones, is applied directly to 1st generation ARTIK series, connectivity to exterior interfaces such as graphic and Ethernet did not take place smoothly. On the other hand, 2nd generation ARTIK will support variety of interfaces that are needed for development of IoT products.
ARTIK 7 is newly added to a lineup of development platforms that is composed of ARTIK 1, ARTIK 5, and ARTIK 10. ARTIK 1 is specialized for wearable devices such as Smart Bands due to industries’ best level of electricity consumption and smallest board area. ARTIK 5 is suitable for Home Hub and network cameras. ARTIK 10 is an IoT module that is suitable for home servers and multimedia players. ARTIK 7 supports performance and electricity consumption that are in the middle of ARTIK 5 and ARTIK 10.
Samsung Electronics is also going to release ARTIK 0 that has lower electricity consumption rate than ARTIK 1 in order to respond to IoT markets where wearables and bio devices require ultra-low electricity consumption. Since there are variety of demands, number of derived ARTI platforms is expected to increase also. It is heard that Samsung Electronics recently received a huge order for ARTIK 5 from a global IT business and this is the first time when Samsung Electronics is selling huge amount of ARTIK platforms.

“Samsung Electronics has set a strategy to sell ARTIK platforms to individuals and businesses.” said a representative for an industry. “If it grabs an upper hand in IoT markets in advance, it will be able to achieve a great success in ‘ecosystem business’ that was not done by Samsung Electronics in the past.”
ARTIK project is the first project where Samsung Electronics is introducing platforms and concept of ecosystem of foreign developers for its component business. ARTIK project is led by SSIC (Samsung Strategy and Innovation Center) that is a group under Samsung Electronics’ DS Sector. President Son Yeong-kwon of SSIC and Vice-President So Byeong-sae are overseeing ARTIK project.
SSIC is working to establish a connection with other businesses to make ARTIK project successful. Not only is SSIC partnered up with operating systems such as Snappy Ubuntu, Tizen, Fedora, and Nucleus but it is also partnered up with Medium One that specializes in technologies that analyze data processing, Sensory that possesses technologies in voice recognition and Vayyar that has capabilities in 3D radar technologies. ARTIK is also compatible with Azure that is Microsoft’s Cloud platform and SAMIIO, which is a self-data collecting platform.
Before Samsung Electronics launched ARTIK platforms, Intel released IoT platforms called Curie and Edison. Qualcomm and Texas Instruments are also strengthening their competitive edge in order to secure corresponding markets.
“A reason why SSIC is overseeing ARTIK project is because platform business itself is an American style.” said a representative for an electronic industry. “Looking at trend of development of ARTIK project, it is totally different from methods that Samsung Electronics have been operating.”
