For the first time, South Korean Government is pushing for development project of super-computers.
Ministry of Science, ICP and Future Planning (MSIP) made an announcement on the 4th that it will establish ‘High-Performance Computing (HPC) Business Group (Corporate Body)’, which will lead development of super-computers, invest about $8.68 million (10 billion KRW) yearly for R&D until 2015, and develop super-computers.
This business group will be formed as a consortium where many developers from industries, universities, and research institutions with experiences and know-how of developing super-computers in South Korea and other countries will be participating through public participation.
MSIP is going to develop super-computers with ‘1 PetaFLOP’ that can calculate1000 trillion decimal places in just one second by 2020. It will then push for development of super-computers with ’30 PetaFLOP’ sequentially from 2021 to 2025.
Not only is MSIP going to simply developer super-computers, it will also support growth of industries by promoting top talents that are able to design system architecture, co-researching with businesses, and transferring technologies. It is going to guarantee approval for small businesses to participate in development of super-computers so that they can secure technical skills and raise their awareness throughout other countries.
“I am hoping that this project will show as a result that gives shape to excellent talents along with technical skills that South Korea possesses and that development ecosystem can be established where many organizations from industries, universities, and research institutions can continuously participate.” said Director General Lee Jin-kyu of MSIP’s Basic Original Research Policy.
