Wireless charging technology that can charge a Smartphone for same time as a wired charger is developed.

WPC (Wireless Power Consortium), which is an international wireless power standard group, held a meeting at Seoul JW Marriott Hotel on the 12th and announced that it finished developing wireless charging technology that supports 15W.

Chairman Menno Treffers of WPC said that WPC finished standardization and that people will be able to see actual commercialized products.

Currently 15W is almost at same level as a wired charger’s output, which indicates that there is not much difference between wired charging and wireless charging. WPC explained that it only takes 1 hour to fully charge a Smartphone wirelessly.

Until now a disadvantage of wireless charging was that it took too long to charge even though it was convenient to use. It took too long because its output was only 5W and its speed not meet consumers’ expectations.

However it seems that wireless charging will become more popular since its level is almost identical to wired charging. An employee from LG Electronics, which is a member of WPC, said that LG Electronics is examining about applying wireless charging to Smartphones and others.

Chairman Treffers of WPC emphasized that wireless charging technology is developing rapidly.

“Aside from Smartphones, we are also developing 2kW wireless charging technologies to graft wireless charging technologies into kitchen appliances and furniture also. Wireless charging technology will be expanded in order of households, cars, offices, and traffic areas.” said Chairman Treffers.

WPC is a wireless power technology standard group that was established in 2008 and is making technologies that guarantee mutual compatibility by forming a consortium of 226 businesses such as LG Electronics, Velkin, Free Scale, IKEA and others. WPC standards are considered as most generalized wireless charging technologies as they are applied into 80 kinds of current Smartphones and 23 models of cars.
