A Korean venture firm used ‘sulfur,’ which used to be called the lighting medium of dream, to successfully develop the ‘sulfur lamp’ with infinite life. As it developed the ‘magnetron’ for lighting, which had been dragging the commercialization of the sulfur lamp, it is highlighted as a new alternative technology in the LED lighting market characterized by vulnerability to the hot and humid environment. The sulfur lamp, which will perform perfectly as outdoor lighting, is forecast to form the two pillars of the future lighting market together with the LED, the best choice for indoor use.
A Korean lighting company SP Lightings (CEO Park Soo-yong) said on April 7 that it succeeded in developing the commercial sulfur lamp model for the first time in the world, and it would begin mass-production sometime this year.
The sulfur lamp is an ‘electrodeless discharge lamp’ that uses sulfur as the lighting medium that produces the emission spectrum closest to the sunlight and uses the microwave energy. The biggest advantage is that it has infinite life as it does not have any electrode. However, the critical weakness is the life of the entire system is limited to a few thousands of hours because of the life of the magnetron that supplies the microwave energy. In the 1990’s, US-based ‘Fusion Lighting’ failed to commercialize the sulfur lamp after investing more than KRW100 billion. Then, LG Electronics purchased Fusion Lighting’s patents and tried to commercialize it for more than 10 years, but it failed to overcome the limit of short life.
SP Lightings took the magnetron a step further to make it suitable for the lighting system. The life of the 4G magnetron, developed by SP Lightings, exceeds 100,000 hours. It is high-output, and robust against heat. So it does not need a cooling fan.
“As it is made in a high-temperature process hotter than 800º, it can be used at several hundred ℃ without any loss of the luminous intensity or reduction of life,” said Park Soo-yong, CEO of SP Lightings. “It is a good substitution for the outdoor LED lighting that can hardly guarantee life and reliability in a hot and humid environment.”
SP Lightings’ sulfur lamp is designed to be installed in the housing of street lamps. It can be used to substitute existing street lamps. It can be used to artificially grow crops in an environment-friendly way regardless of season and location, or as it does not emit any ultraviolet (UV) ray, it can be used for environment-friendly fishing. SP Lighting has already applied for patents for 24 original technologies.
This company is planning to enter into a strategic alliance with GE, Phillips and Osram, which have powerful global distribution networks and make inroads into overseas markets.
SP Lightings was established by CEO Park Soo-yong, former POSTECH professor, after retirement with the funds invested by his fellow professors. It has been concentrating on the sulfur lamp R&D for the past 5 years.

에스피라이팅스, 세계 최초 조명용 마그네트론 장착한 `설퍼 램프` 상용화

국내 벤처 기업이 꿈의 조명 매질로 불리던 ‘유황’을 이용해 무한대의 수명을 가진 ‘설퍼(Sulfur) 램프’를 개발하는 데 성공했다. 그동안 설퍼 램프 상용화에 발목이 잡혔던 조명용 ‘마그네트론’을 개발하면서 고온?다습한 환경에 취약한 발광다이오드(LED) 조명 시장에는 새로운 대안 기술로 주목받았다. 실외용 조명으로 완벽한 성능을 갖추게 된 설퍼 램프는 실내용으로 최적인 LED와 함께 향후 미래 조명 시장의 양대 축을 이룰 것으로 전망된다.
국내 전문 기업 에스피라이팅스(대표 박수용)는 세계 최초로 설퍼 램프 상용화 모델 개발에 성공, 올해 본격적인 양산에 들어간다고 7일 밝혔다.
설퍼 램프는 태양광에 가장 근접한 발광 스펙트럼을 내는 유황을 조명 매질로 사용하고 마이크로파 에너지를 이용하는 ‘무전극 방전등’이다. 전극이 없어 수명이 무한하다는 게 가장 큰 장점이다. 하지만 마이크로파 에너지를 공급하는 마그네트론의 수명 때문에 전체 시스템의 수명이 수천 시간대로 제한되는 치명적인 약점이 있었다. 1990년대 미국 ‘퓨전라이팅’이 1000억원 넘게 투자하고도 상용화에 실패한 이유다. 이어 LG전자가 퓨전라이팅의 특허를 사 10년 넘게 상용화에 노력해 왔지만 끝내 단명의 한계를 극복하지 못했다.
에스피라이팅스는 마그네트론을 조명용 시스템에 적합하게 한 단계 진화시켰다. 에스피라이팅스가 개발한 4세대 마그네트론은 수명이 10만시간을 넘고, 고출력이면서도 열에 강해 냉각팬을 필요로 하지 않는 특성을 가졌다.
박수용 에스피라이팅스 대표는 “800도 이상의 고온 공정에서 만들어지기 때문에 수백도의 고온에서도 광도나 수명 감소 없이 사용할 수 있다”며 “고온?다습한 환경에서 수명과 신뢰성을 보장하기 힘든 실외용 LED 조명을 대체하기에 적합하다”고 말했다.
에스피라이팅스의 설퍼 램프는 기존 가로등 하우징에 그대로 장착할 수 있게 설계됐다. 가로등 대체형으로 활용할 수 있다. 계절과 지역을 초월한 친환경 인공 농작물 재배나 자외선(UV)이 나오지 않는 특성을 활용해 친환경 어업 등에도 적용할 수 있다. 이미 관련 원천기술 24개를 특허 출원했다.
이 회사는 막강한 글로벌 유통망을 갖추고 있는 GE?필립스?오스람 등과 전략적 제휴를 맺어 해외 시장을 공략할 계획이다.
에스피라이팅스는 포스텍 교수였던 박수용 대표가 은퇴 후 동료 교수들로부터 투자받아 설립한 회사로 지난 5년간 설퍼 램프 연구개발에만 집중해 왔다.
