Halla E&C, a local wind power developer, announced that it builds an offshore wind farm having the capacity of 100MW until 2014 near the east coast of Jeju Island. To that end, it is going to partner with Korea Midland Power, POSCO Power and Korea District Heating Corporation. Specifically, the wind farm will be located in the Woodo islet, Handong-ri and Pyeongdae-ri area of the island. Though the first-phase capacity is set at 100MW, the company is planning to increase it up to 300MW ultimately. Once the entire project is completed, the plant can generate about 800GWh of electricity a year, which is equivalent to some 25,000 households’ combined consumption, while reducing 450,000 tons of greenhouse gas emissions each year. Currently, Halla is preparing those documents necessary to acquire the government approval, based on the results of the pilot surveys and examinations it commissioned. When it comes to the wind turbines, it is going to use domestic products with the capacity of 3MW to 5MW. However, it is not ruling out the possibility of employing imported ones on condition that the products are unavailable due to a delay of the development.
