In line with the development of servers equipped with AMD`s CPU Opteron by server makers such as Uniwide, LG IBM, and Eslim Korea, Linux program developers including Red Hat, SuSe Linux, and Hancom Linux are unveiling operating systems (OSs) tailored for 64bit AMD CPU.

These moves of Linux firms apparently seem to be part of their efforts to diversify server OS market as 64bit Opteron of AMD is arising as an alternative of Intel CPUs.

Charm Media Tech, the local sales agent of SuSe Linux, recently launched SuSe`s 64bit Linux OS for AMD`s Opteron in the domestic market.

The sales agent of Red Hat, NTC Korea, plans to roll out during this week a 64bit Linux OS of Red Hat `Enterprise Linux 3.0 for AMD` that supports AMD`s Opteron chip. NTC Korea will promote sales of the new OS in conjunction with server makers, and it intends to market OSs that can support both Intel and AMD CPUs.

Hancom Linux, which introduced its 64bit OS for Opteron CPU `Hancom Linux 3.1 Advanced 64bit` at the Linux Expo held in September, is conducting its beta tests for shipment. It is especially notable that Hancom introduced 64bit OS for Opteron prior to that for Itanium chip, deviating from its traditional practice of developing IA-based OSs.

"While IA servers are taking dominant position in the market, AMD servers are expected to begin picking up sales toward the year`s end as it is easy to expand their memory bandwidth according to capacities of CPUs," said Heo Won-seok, CEO of NTC Korea.
