CrucialTec, an input solution specialist, succeeded in developing a composite ceramic material to replace sapphire glass for the first time in Korea. With strength close to sapphire glass, the unit price of this material is far lower. This material can be processed in thickness one tenth that of sapphire glass, and thus is anticipated of application to a wide range of fields.
CrucialTec (CEO: Ahn Geon-jun) announced on the 12th that it had succeeded in developing a crystal ceramic material with durability twice that of high-strength glass using transparent composite ceramic material. The surface strength of crystal ceramic is 8H. 1H is a unit indicating the degree of damage caused when a surface of glass is scratched with a substance holding the strength of pencil lead. Surface strength of premium glass is around 3- 4H and that of sapphire glass is approx. 9H.
Although surface strength is slightly lower than sapphire glass, the new material is far cheaper and produces excellent workability. At present, the thinnest sapphire glass can be made is 300㎛. In addition, error rate increases in the process to make the glass thinner. However, crystal ceramic can be made as thin as 30㎛ and the yield is high at around 90%.
CrucialTec decided to apply crystal ceramic first to the company’s own fingerprint recognition module. For fingerprint modules used in smartphones, surface strength of the glass is very important. Flaws on the glass surface exert a direct impact on the recognition rate. This is why Apple is using the expensive sapphire glass in its fingerprint recognition module.
The price of crystal ceramic fingerprint recognition module developed by CrucialTec is only one seventh of the sapphire module. Applying crystal ceramic material also enhances the design of fingerprint module. The existing fingerprint recognition modules were colored using UV coating method. However, UV coating made the surface uneven, which caused the light to scatter. However, crystal ceramic produces sophisticated colors close to glass.
CrucialTec has set out a plan to convert the fingerprint recognition module line to crystal ceramic package line during the first half of the year. There is almost no burden of additional investment as the company can use the existing production facilities. Rather, the productivity will be increased all the more as the package structure became simpler.
CrucialTec has applied for 15 patents on composite crystal ceramic material in Korea and abroad. The plan is to secure source technology, and thus to prevent market entry by competitors. CrucialTec will showcase the crystal ceramic package to its key customers at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2014.
“The yield of existing fingerprint recognition module line is around 92%. However, the yield of the crystal ceramic package line is almost 98%,” said CEO Ahn Geon-gun. “We will secure unrivalled competitive power in fingerprint recognition module market.”

크루셜텍, 사파이어 대체할 수 있는 세라믹 복합 소재 개발…지문 인식 모듈에 처음 적용

입력 솔루션 전문업체 크루셜텍이 국내 처음 사파이어 유리를 대체할 수 있는 세라믹 복합소재 개발에 성공했다. 사파이어 유리에 가까운 강도를 구현했지만, 원가는 훨씬 싸다. 사파이어 유리보다 10분의 1 수준으로 얇게 가공할 수 있어 향후 다양한 영역에 적용될 것으로 기대된다.
크루셜텍(대표 안건준) 최근 투명 세라믹 복합 물질을 활용해 고강도 유리보다 갑절 이상 내구성이 좋은 크리스털 세라믹 소재 개발에 성공했다고 12일 밝혔다.
크리스털 세라믹은 8H의 표면 강도를 자랑한다. 1H는 연필심 강도의 물질로 유리 표면을 긁었을 때 파손되는 것을 나타내는 지표다. 종전 고급 유리 표면 강도가 3~4H, 사파이어 유리는 9H 수준이다.
사파이어 유리보다 표면 강도는 조금 떨어지지만, 원가가 훨씬 저렴하고 가공성도 뛰어나다. 현재 사파이어 유리는 아무리 얇게 만들어도 300㎛ 두께가 한계다. 유리를 얇게 가공하는 공정에서 불량률도 높아진다. 그러나 크리스털 세라믹은 30㎛까지 얇게 만들 수 있고 수율도 90%대다.
크루셜텍은 크리스털 세라믹을 우선 자사 지문인식 모듈에 적용하기로 했다. 스마트폰에 쓰이는 지문인식 모듈은 표면 유리강도가 매우 중요하다. 유리 표면에 흠이 나면 인식률에 직접적인 영향을 미치기 때문이다. 애플이 비싼 사파이어 유리를 지문인식 모듈에 채택한 이유다.
크루셜텍이 개발한 크리스털 세라믹 지문인식 모듈은 사파이어 모듈의 7분의 1 가격 수준이다. 크리스털 세라믹을 적용하면 지문인식 모듈 디자인도 좋아진다. 종전 지문인식 모듈에는 자외선(UV) 코팅 방식으로 색을 입혔다. UV 코팅은 표면이 울퉁불퉁해 빛을 산란시키는 문제가 있었다. 크리스털 세라믹은 어떤 색을 입혀도 유리에 가까운 고급스러운 빛감을 낼 수 있다.
크루셜텍은 상반기 중 지문인식 모듈 라인을 크리스털 세라믹 패키지 라인으로 전환할 계획이다. 기존 생산설비를 그대로 쓸 수 있어 추가 투자 부담이 거의 없다. 패키지 구조가 단순해져 오히려 생산성은 더 올라간다.
크루셜텍은 크리스탈 세라믹 복합소재에 관한 특허 15개를 국내외에 출원했다. 소재 원천 기술을 선점해 경쟁사들의 진입을 막기 위해서다. 이번 모바일월드콩그레스(MWC) 2014 행사에서 크리스털 세라믹 패키지를 주요 고객사에 공개할 계획이다.
안건준 사장은 “종전 지문인식 모듈 라인 수율은 92% 수준인데, 크리스털 세라믹 패키지 라인은 98%에 가깝다”며 “지문인식 모듈 시장에서 독보적인 경쟁력을 확보해 나갈 것”이라고 말했다.
