Xaos Motors announced on Thursday that it has patented automotive LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) system technology that is connected to LED headlamp.
LiDAR is a sensing method that recognizes surrounding objects and environment through reflected signals from laser. Because it can also be used in bad weather, it is seen as a key method for autonomous vehicles.
Xaos Motors’ technology utilizes LED headlamp for a LiDAR system. “The light source of a LED headlamp that can shoot high intensity light can also be used as the light source for a LiDAR system and expand measurement distance.” said an official from the company. “We plan to supplement a concern for low resolution with a distance computation algorithm.” The company emphasized that its technology will be able to reduce manufacturing cost of LiDAR sensors. CEO Hwang Cheol-jeung of Xaos Motors emphasized that the company’s recent technology is an important technology that will able to combine sensors used for autonomous driving.”

Xaos Motors is a venture capital-backed company that was established last year. Back in June, the company introduced a MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) LiDAR system called “XCAT”. It also developed motors for electric vehicles prior to announcing XCAT. A spokesperson for the company said that the company plans to set up a collaborative response team with CES 2021 as the starting point and push for global commercialization.
