It is forecast that Korea’s materials and parts industry will record a trade surplus of $100 billion for the first time this year. It is anticipated to lead fulfillment of the vision ‘Manufacturing Industry 3.0 Era,’ which is aimed at advancement as one of the four global materials and parts industries.

On the 22nd, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MoTIE) announced that the trade surplus of domestic materials and parts industry, which had been $77.9 billion in the third quarter, would increase to over $100 billion next month and again to $104.7 billion by the yearend.

The exceeding of $100 billion in trade surplus holds great significance that materials and parts industry has emerged as a key element in Korea’s national competiveness as the finished product assembly ability became standardized across the world. In particular, it is evaluated all the more positively as materials and parts industry is a field that supports the competitive power of smart phone, automobile, digital home appliances and shipbuilding industries for which Korea has a competitive edge.

According to MoTIE, materials and parts trade surplus up to September this year has been $203.3 billion as export increased especially for the advanced countries, such as Japan, the U.S. and Europe. As for import, it also displayed a trend of increase to $125.4 billion and continued on the growth of a virtuous cycle to record a trade surplus of $77.9 billion in the third quarter. In addition, the level of dependence on import from Japan has been reduced to 18%, the lowest in history, and the concentration of export increase on China has been weakened. As such, the trade structure is stabilized. At present, materials and parts industry accounts for 45% and 62% of Korea’s overall manufacturing industry production and added values respectively.

The government’s active fostering of materials and parts industry with an investment of approximately KRW 3.7 trillion until 2013 following the special act establishment in 2001 has produced an outcome, according to an analysis.

With the accomplishments so far, the government has established a roadmap to become one of the ‘global top 4 in terms of materials and parts industry by 2020’ to develop high-tech materials for market dominance in the future, to improve quality of parts through technological convergence, to establish a growth-leading ecosystem for materials and parts industry and to exercise leadership in the global supply network. The goal is to achieve $650 billion in export and $250 billion in trade surplus by 2020.

MoTIE will hold ‘Materials and Parts Industry Week 2014’ in KINTEX, Ilsan for three days from the 22nd to the 24th of this month. This year, materials and parts industry is estimated to achieve a trade surplus of $100 billion. As much as so, the exhibition will be an opportunity to inspect and experience performances and competencies of materials and parts industry at a glance. .

Companies, organizations, universities and research centers will participate in the event to exhibit their products and organize investment consulting sessions. In addition, together with various seminars and forums, an award ceremony for people with distinguished services to the materials and parts industry will be held.

“Korea achieved an increase in both materials and parts export and import despite difficult economic conditions abroad, such as a recent exchange rate drop and the aggressive pursuit by China, and thus the trade surplus is increasing,” said a MoTIE insider. “Reflecting the new paradigm change, the government will establish a customized support system and start a market-leading technology development centering on materials and parts industry.”
