Satya Nadella, who visited Korea for the first time after becoming the CEO of Microsoft, accelerated implementation of IDC in Korea.
He agreed to actively cooperate current creative economic activities of Korean government such as promotion of computer education, improvement of small and medium businesses. He discussed ICT-related business cooperation and IoT with major companies in Korea.
After the keynote address at the ‘MS TechDays Korea 2014’ held in Seoul Grand Intercontinental Hotel in the morning of September 24th, the CEO met with Yoon Sang-jik, minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, to discuss about the ICT sector investment.
He mentioned "There are a lot of fields that MS can help with in realizing creative economy in Korea. Especially, we like to work closely with the Korean government on computer education and improvement of productivity of small and mid-sized companies. Minister Yoon replied, “I hope MS will play an active role as a partner for us to strengthen the creative economy.”
MS and Ministry of Industry said “we will be working closely with each other” regarding the implementation of MS IDC but did not comment further on the details of the discussion.
A ministry official said, "it means it takes some more time to make the final decision since this is a large-scale investment project.” It also means, despite the delayed schedule, decision for the construction of data center in Korea is confirmed.
In particular, there is an analysis that carefully suggests that they may have discussed on starting a rental service prior to the implementation of IDC in the subsequent meetings between the MS CEO and President of KT, Hwang Chang-gyu. Reportedly, he discussed about the cooperation on data center and the cloud services in presence of KT vice president (the director of business management).
CEO Nadella also met with top executives of LG Electronics and exchanged an MOU for comprehensive business cooperation on IoT. In the meeting where Gu Bon-joon, Vice Chairman of LG Electronics, Ahn Seung-kwon, President of LG Electronics and Kim Jeong-woo, representatives from MS Korea were present, the two companies shared their ideas on business status and strategies and how to reinforce the strategic partnership between the two companies.
LG Electronics said, "They are the services and products that integrate LG`s innovative technology with MS cloud services platform that will provide a differentiated user experience for all the B2C customers.”
Similarly, Samsung Electronics was also said to have an in-depth discussion with MS regarding the field of IoT. Particular attention was paid on the decisions of the two companies on the recent Smart Home business of Samsung Electronics. MS joined ‘AllSeen Alliance,’ an IoT coalition led by the manufacturing industry in July 2014 and drew attentions of many parties regarding the role to be played by the company. Industry predicted that MS would accelerate IoT business with various means including mounting ‘AllJoyn’ protocol from AllSeen Alliance on Windows 9, the next MS Operating System.
They discussed about ongoing patent royalty litigations of both companies and smart phone and tablet PC businesses. MS has filed a lawsuit in Manhattan federal court last August against Samsung for violation of patent license agreement.

나델라 MS CEO, "LG전자 등과 사물인터넷 사업 협력…데이터센터 한국구축 가속도"

취임 후 처음 방한한 사티아 나델라 마이크로소프트(MS) 최고경영자(CEO)는 인터넷데이터센터(IDC) 한국 구축작업에 속도를 붙였다.
그와 동시에 컴퓨터 교육, 중소기업 생산성 향상 등 정부가 추진하는 창조경제 구현작업에도 적극 협력하기로 했다. 국내 대기업과는 사물인터넷(IoT) 등 ICT 관련 사업 협력을 협의했다.
나델라 CEO는 24일 오전 서울 그랜드인터컨티넨탈 호텔에서 ‘MS 테크데이즈 코리아 2014’ 기조 강연 후 윤상직 산업통상자원부 장관과 만나 ICT 산업 투자 협력 방안을 논의했다.
나델라 CEO는 “한국의 창조경제를 구현하는 데 MS가 협력할 수 있는 분야가 많다”며 “특히 컴퓨터 교육, 중소기업 생산성 향상, 정부 차원 ICT 활용 분야에서 긴밀히 협력하기를 희망한다”고 언급했다. 윤 장관도 “MS가 우리 제조업 경쟁력 강화, 창조경제 구현을 위한 중요한 파트너로 적극적인 역할을 해줄 것”을 당부했다.
MS와 산업부는 국내 MS IDC 구축과 관련해 “계속 긴밀히 협의해 나가기로 했다”면서도 구체적인 논의 결과는 밝히지 않았다.
산업부 고위 관계자는 “대규모 투자사업인 만큼 최종 결정까지 시간이 좀 더 필요하다는 의미”라고 말했다. 일정이 다소 늦춰졌지만 데이터센터 한국 유치는 사실상 결정됐다는 의미다.
특히 이날 나델라 CEO가 황창규 KT 회장과 잇따라 회동하면서 IDC 구축 전 데이터센터 임대 형태로 서비스를 시작할 것이라는 분석도 제기된다. KT 경영기획 부사장이 배석한 회동에서 데이터센터와 클라우드 서비스 분야 협력방안이 논의된 것으로 전해졌다.
나델라 CEO는 LG전자 최고 경영진과도 만났다. 사물인터넷(IoT)에 관한 포괄적 업무 협력 양해각서(MOU)를 교환했다. 구본준 LG전자 부회장, 안승권 LG전자 사장과 김정우 한국MS 대표 등이 참석한 자리에서 두 회사는 사업현황과 전략 등을 공유하고 전략적 파트너십 강화 방안을 논의했다.
LG전자는 “LG전자의 혁신적 기술력과 MS 클라우드 서비스 플랫폼이 결합한 제품과 서비스로 B2C 고객은 물론이고 다양한 B2B 고객을 대상으로 차별화된 사용자 경험을 제공할 수 있을 것”이라고 밝혔다.
LG전자와 마찬가지로 삼성전자와도 IoT 분야에서의 심도 있는 논의가 진행된 것으로 관측됐다. 특히 IoT 초기 모델로 삼성전자가 밀고 있는 스마트홈 분야에서 협력 내용이 도출됐는지 주목됐다. MS는 지난 7월 제조업계가 주도하는 IoT 연합체 ‘올신얼라이언스(AllSeen Alliance)’에 가입하면서 IoT에서의 MS 역할이 주목을 받아왔다. 업계는 MS가 차기 운용체계(OS) 윈도9에 올신얼라이언스의 ‘올조인(AllJoyn)’ 프로토콜을 적용하는 등 IoT 사업에 박차를 가할 것으로 내다봤다.
이와 동시에 양사 특허 로열티 관련 소송과 스마트폰, 태블릿PC 사업에 대해 논의한 것으로 알려졌다. MS는 지난 8월 삼성전자를 상대로 특허 사용권 계약 위반을 이유로 미국 뉴욕 맨해튼 연방 지방법원 소송을 제기한 바 있다.
