LG takes LCD a step forward…classing up TV.
LG Electronics (LGE) will introduce the ‘curved UHD OLED TV’ called the ‘dream TV’ to the market next month. This TV implements a UHD resolution 4 times higher than that of full HD with the OLED panel that is excellent in color reproduction range and thickness. Following the full HD OLED TV, LGE is highly likely to make another ‘world first’ with this product. It appears that it enhanced the class of TV a notch higher.
“We will release the UHD OLED TV next month,” said a high-ranking executive in charge of TV at LGE on July 13. “We are highly likely to launch it abroad first before releasing it in Korea.”
For LGE, pushing the OLED TV hard, a TV that applied UHD picture quality to a curved OLED panel is called the ‘UHD OLED TV.’ It has not been determined yet whether to put UHD or OLED in front. So far only the UHD TV (LCD panel) and the OLED TV (full HD) are available in the market.
LGE is highly likely to introduce three models, 55, 65 and 77 inches, at the same time. As for their prices, the smallest 55-inch TV is forecast to be more expensive than KRW10 million. “The price is much more than KRW10 million,” said another LGE executive. “The 65 and 77-inch TV product will be several tens of millions of Korean Won.”
However, the price is highly likely to fall quickly. The 55-inch curved full HD OLED TV, which LG introduced first in the world, was released at $15,000 in April 2013, but the price fell by more than $10,000 in a year to $4,000 or so. It may be attributed to LG’s aggressive marketing strategy, but the credit rather goes to the continued improvement of the panel production yield that greatly affects prices. Currently the yield of the full HD OLED panel is known to have reached 80% or so. It has been confirmed that the production yield of the UHD OLED panel is also improving.
LGE is determined to take the initiative in the next-generation TV market with the OLED TV. Anticipating the special demands of the Brazil World Cup at the end of last year, most global TV makers were concentrating on the UHD TV, but LGE concentrated its energies on the OLED TV as well. The company put Mr. Ha Hyeon-hoe, former LG Display executive, in charge of the TV business of LGE (CEO of the Home Entertainment Company TV).
Mr. Ha Hyeon-hoe said earlier this year, “As the OLED provides far better picture quality than any other TV and the LCD replaced the CRT, the OLED will replace the LCD in an instant.”
A market research firm, Display Search, forecast that the size of the OLED TV will increase from 100,000 units this year to 1 million units next year, to 2 million in 2016, and to 4 million in 2017.

LG, 곡면 울트라HD OLED TV 내달 출시
LCD서 한단계 진화…TV 격 높여
LG가 ‘꿈의 TV’로 불리는 ‘곡면 울트라HD OLED TV’를 다음 달 시장에 내놓는다. 풀HD보다 4배나 뛰어난 초고화질(UHD) 해상도를 색재현율?두께 등에서 우수한 유기발광다이오드(OLED) 패널로 구현한 TV다. 풀HD 화질의 OLED TV에 이어 LG전자가 ‘세계 최초’ 기록을 세울 가능성이 매우 높은 제품으로 TV의 격을 한 단계 높였다는 평가를 받을 것으로 보인다.
13일 LG전자 TV담당 고위 임원은 “울트라HD OLED TV를 다음 달 출시할 것”이라며 “국내보다는 해외에 먼저 내놓을 가능성이 높다”고 말했다.
OLED TV를 강력히 밀고 있는 LG전자는 UHD 화질에 곡면 OLED 패널을 적용한 TV를 ‘울트라HD 올레드 TV’로 통칭한다. 아직 울트라HD와 올레드 가운데 어느 단어를 앞세울지를 확정하지는 않았다. 지금까지는 UHD TV(LCD 패널)와 OLED TV(풀HD 화질)만 출시돼 있다.
LG전자는 55?65?77인치 세 가지 모델을 선보이며 동시 출시 가능성이 크다. 가격대는 가장 작은 크기인 55인치 TV가 1000만원을 넘을 전망이다. LG전자 다른 임원은 “가격은 1000만원을 훌쩍 넘는다”며 “65?77인치 TV 제품은 수천만원에 달할 것”이라고 말했다.
하지만 가격은 빠르게 하락할 가능성이 크다. LG가 세계 최초로 선보인 55인치 곡면 풀HD OLED TV도 지난해 4월 1만5000달러에 출시했지만 1년 사이에 1만달러 이상 내려간 4000달러대에 판매되고 있다. 공격적인 시장 공략 전략도 있지만 가격에 크게 영향을 미치는 패널 생산 수율이 지속적으로 개선됐기 때문이다. 현재 풀HD 화질의 OLED 패널 수율은 80% 수준까지 올라와 있는 것으로 전해진다. UHD 화질의 OLED 패널 생산 수율도 개선되는 것으로 확인됐다.
LG전자는 OLED TV로 확실히 차세대 TV시장 주도권을 잡겠다는 의지다. 지난해 말 브라질 월드컵 특수를 앞두고 대부분의 글로벌 TV업계가 UHD TV에 집중하는 사이 LG전자는 OLED TV에도 역량을 투입해 왔다. LG디스플레이 출신 하현회 사장을 LG전자 TV사업 총괄(HE사업본부장)에 배치한 것도 이 일환이란 분석이다.
하 사장은 올 초 “OLED는 기존 TV와 한 차원 다른 화질을 제공한다”며 “LCD가 브라운관(CRT)을 대체했듯이 일순간 OLED가 LCD를 대체하게 될 것”이라고 강조했다.
시장조사업체인 디스플레이서치는 올해 OLED TV 시장규모가 10만대에서 내년 100만대, 2016년 200만대, 2017년 400만대로 확대될 것으로 내다봤다.
