Consumers can buy it for less than KRW10,000 if they receive rebates from mobile carriers up to the government’s ceiling.

LGE (CEOs Koo Bon-Joon and Jeong Do-hyeon) said on May 19 that the company would release the low-end LTE smartphone ‘LG F70’ through the three mobile carriers.

F70, priced at KRW279,400, is the cheapest LTE smartphone ever released in Korea. If the mobile carriers’ rebates are received up to the government’s ceiling, it can be purchased for less than KRW10,000.

It comes with a 4.5-inch WVGA(800×480) LCD display, a 1.2㎓ quadcore processor and 1GB RAM. Its size is 127.5㎜×66.4㎜×9.95㎜ and it weighs 129.6g. It has a 5 mega-pixel rear camera and a VGA (0.4 mega-pixel) front camera, and the capacity of its removable battery is 2440㎃h. It has Android 4.4(KitKat) OS. It supports Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi, Assisted Global Positioning System (A-GPS: receiving data over the wireless communication network and WiFi to correct positioning), near field communication (NFC) and FM radio. F70 comes in one of two colors, black and white.

It offers several convenience features including the lock screen release method ‘Knock Code,’ LGE’ main user experience (UX), ‘Plug & Pop’ that automatically runs a favorite media application (app) when the earphone is inserted and ‘Quick Memo’ that enables users to take memos in any screen.

Park Jong-seok, CEO of the MC Company of LGE, said, “We will continuously launch LTE products with reasonable prices.”

◇ News commentary

As LGE launches an LTE smartphone for less than KRW300,000, cheap 4G mobile communication smartphones are forecast to appear one after another. In time for the end of business suspension, all three mobile carriers said they would lower the factory prices of existing smartphones. It seems that they will continue to release low-priced smartphones for the time being.

The communication industry already lowered the prices of existing models. During the period of exclusive business, KT lowered the prices of its KT-only models, i.e. Samsung Electronics ‘Galaxy S4 MINI’ and LGE ‘Optimus GK’ to KRW259,600, and halved the price of Apple ‘iPhone 5 (16GB)’ to KRW484,000 in just a year after launch.

SK Telecom also lowered the price of Pantech ‘Vega Secret Up’ by KRW270,000, and the prices of 8 models, i.e. ‘iPhone 5 (KRW484,000),’ ‘Galaxy Active (KRW499,000),’ ‘Galaxy Round (KRW726,000),’ ‘Optimus G Pro (KRW399,000),’ ‘Galaxy Note 2 (KRW697,000),’ ‘Optimus Vu2 (KRW330,000),’ ‘Galaxy S3 3G (KRW300,000)’ and ‘Galaxy Core Advance (KRW259,000),’ by KRW60,000~KRW300,000.

LG Uplus also cut the prices of 9 smartphones, including ‘Gx,’ ‘G Pro,’ ‘G2,’ ‘Galaxy S4 LTE-A,’ ‘Galaxy Mega’ and ‘Vega Iron,’ by about KRW200,000.

Cell phone carriers and smartphone manufacturers lowered the prices of LTE smartphones, which used to be sold at KRW800,000~KRW1 million, in unison because of fierce competition. The competition terrain, in which one or two premium smartphones used to dominate the market, has changed. As a large number of smartphones with similar specifications and performance are launched, consumers became more resistant to prices. As the display must be upfront in smartphones, it is more difficult to differentiate the design than feature phones, it appears that price competition will further intensify.

The mobile carriers are also lowering prices to proactively respond to the ‘Terminal Distribution Structure Improvement Act’ scheduled to go into effect in October. Their intention is to eliminate any possibility of consumer discrimination by lowering prices rather than raising prices and giving rebates.

Mobile carriers will be able to win back their initiative in terminal supply and demand it lost to manufacturers when smartphones were introduced. Factory prices have included marketing expenses in the name of rebates paid by manufacturers. The bigger the difference between the actual supply price mobile carriers get from terminal manufacturers and the factory price, the bigger the size of marketing expenses of terminal manufacturers. As there is a great deal of marketing funds they can use, manufacturers have been very capable of controlling sales strategies. Samsung Electronics is against the Terminal Distribution Structure Improvement Act for this reason.

Industry insiders said, “If the factory prices of terminals are lowered, we can reduce the unnecessary war of attrition, e.g. rebate competition and provide different rate plans and services.”
