Samsung Display is expanding its production capacity for flexible display. It has been caught that its strategic customer Samsung Electronics is working hard on its second smartphone with a flexible display, which was a big disappointment last year. Given that Samsung Display is adding capacity to its existing production line prior to its investment in new facilities, it has been highly anticipated that Samsung Electronics’ second smartphone with a flexible display should be a flagship model, unlike the Galaxy Round which was sold in limited quantities.

According to the industry on the 6th, Samsung Display is recently expanding the capacity for its existing flexible display production line by 50% prior to its investment in new facilities (A3).

Samsung Display has recently set out the construction of its Gen-6 (1500×1850㎜) facilities (A3) with a monthly capacity of 15,000 panels. It has placed orders for some board process equipment including steppers which have a relatively longer lead time. Given that orders have been placed for the equipment that take more than 9 months until delivery, it is interpreted that the company aims to start operation in the first half of the next year. The industry is expecting the company to start placing orders for equipment with a shorter lead time (around 6 months) next month.

As Samsung Display adds more Gen-5.5 (1300×1500㎜) flexible display capacity to its A2 facilities while it is executing capex for the A3 facilities, the industry is paying close attention to its rationale behind such a move.

The A2 line has a monthly production capacity of 8,000 panels based on substrates, which can be theoretically translated into a monthly production of more than 1-1.5mn units. But there are issues with production yields and using this line for R&D. Moreover, the encapsulation process, where organic and inorganic layers are piled on each other multiple times, becomes a bottleneck so, in reality, it is difficult to keep up with the capacity for mass produced products. This means it is incapable of meeting requirements from a mass produced smartphone model with a monthly volume of 1mn units.

The expansion of the A2 line this time is to reinforce the encapsulation process. Therefore, it is anticipated that its actual production capacity will increase by 50% in the second half. The prevailing analysis within the industry is that the second smartphone with a flexible display from Samsung Electronics will be a mass produced model. The A3 plant has a larger board and a relatively bigger capacity but is not ready for ramp-up in the second half.

Recent reports from foreign media are hinting that the Galaxy Note 4 will likely use a flexible display, making such an analysis more convincing.

At the same time, specifications for this display are being defined. It is known that the company will use a combination of display components similar to the existing one. It is highly likely that they will use tempered glass as they used to because they failed to find a way to reduce scratch, although plastics has been considered for cover material to deliver a new design.

An industry insider commented, “When it comes to smartphones with a flexible display, production capacity of a flexible display is very crucial as well as demand for such a product. Marketing activities to create market demand will only follow a sufficient production capacity”.
