Hyundai & Kia will install the Android OS-based AVN (audio video navigation) system in all new cars to be released in the future. Hyundai & Kia are the first auto makers in the world to apply Android OS to the AVN system in full scale. These two companies plan to accelerate the execution of the smart car strategy that reinforces Android-based connectivity and safety.

According to the industry on October 21, Hyundai & Kia is planning to install the Android OS-based next-generation AVN system in the ‘All New Soul’ and the ‘New Genesis’ scheduled to be released by the end of this year. They will also apply the same system to all new cars slated to be released next year, including the New Sonata.

“Hyundai & Kia will install the Android AVN system, which is linked to all the smartphone functions, and provides its own Appstore and communication-based telematics service, in the All New Soul and the New Genesis in earnest,” said an industry insider. “All new cars released next year will have this system by default or as an option.”

This system, which Kia Motors named `UVO 2.0,` will be installed in the All New Soul as a default AVN system. Hyundai Motor will also apply the same system to the New Genesis. The two most noteworthy models among the cars Hyundai & Kia release this year will signal the expansion of the Android AVN system.

The biggest feature of the Android-based AVN system is the reinforcement of the connectivity between automobiles and smart devices in response to the diffusion of mobile devices. This system will be linked to the smartphone and make it possible to use not only the default terminal functions, but also multimedia in the car. Also, users can take advantage of the open OS to freely download the dedicated application and optimize the functions. In particular, this system implemented a new telematics function that can remotely control the car through the WiFi and modem connection.

Hyundai & Kia took the initiative in installing the Android AVN system in order to take the leadership as the ‘first mover’ in the next-generation smart car market. Hyundai & Kia have invested tens of billions of Korean Won and mobilized hundreds of SW developers in the past three years to concentrate on system development and stabilization. European car makers are developing Android AVN systems, but lost the title of the ‘world’s first’ to Hyundai & Kia.

“As Hyundai & Kia are strong-willed about development and the external R&D ecosystem is solidly implemented, Korea auto makers became the first in the world to develop the Android AVN system,” said an industry insider. “As foreign car makers are also developing this system, Android will become one of the main operating systems for the smart car AVN system.”

현대?기아차, 안드로이드 AVN 시스템 전 차종으로 확대

현대?기아차가 향후 출시하는 모든 신차에 안드로이드 운용체계(OS) 기반의 AVN(오디오비디오내비게이션) 시스템을 탑재한다. 안드로이드 OS를 AVN 시스템에 전면 적용하는 것은 전 세계 완성차 업체 가운데 현대?기아차가 처음이다. 이 회사는 개방형 OS인 안드로이드를 기반으로 연결성과 안전성을 강화한 스마트카 전략을 가속화한다는 전략이다.

21일 관련 업계에 따르면, 현대?기아차는 연내 출시되는 `올 뉴 쏘울`과 `신형 제네시스`에 안드로이드 OS 기반의 차세대 AVN 시스템을 탑재할 예정이다. 또 내년 출시 예정인 신형 쏘나타를 비롯해 모든 신차에도 같은 시스템을 적용한다는 계획이다.

업계 관계자는 “스마트폰의 모든 기능을 연동하고 전용 앱스토어와 통신 기반 텔레매틱스 서비스 등이 가능한 안드로이드 AVN 시스템을 현대?기아차가 올 뉴 쏘울과 신형 제네시스부터 본격적으로 탑재할 예정”이라며 “내년부터 출시되는 신차에도 이 시스템이 기본형 또는 옵션으로 적용될 것”이라고 밝혔다.

기아차가 `유보 2.0`으로 명명한 이 시스템은 올 뉴 쏘울부터 기본형 AVN 시스템으로 탑재된다. 특히 현대차도 신형 제네시스에 같은 시스템을 적용함으로써, 현대?기아차가 연내 선보이는 신차 중 가장 주목받는 두 모델이 안드로이드 AVN 시스템 확대의 신호탄이 되는 셈이다.

안드로이드 기반 AVN 시스템의 가장 큰 특징은 모바일 기기 확산에 대응해 자동차와 스마트 기기와의 연결성을 강화하는 것이 핵심이다. 스마트폰과 연동해 기본 단말기 기능은 물론 멀티미디어를 자동차 안에서 자유롭게 이용할 수 있다. 또 개방형 OS를 토대로 전용 애플리케이션을 사용자가 자유롭게 내려받아 기능을 최적화할 수 있다. 특히 와이파이 및 모뎀 연결을 통해 원격으로 차량을 제어할 수 있는 신개념 텔레매틱스 기능까지 구현했다.

현대?기아차가 안드로이드 AVN 시스템 탑재에 선도적으로 나선 것은 차세대 스마트카 시장에서 `퍼스트 무버`로 주도권을 쥐기 위한 포석이다. 현대?기아차는 최근 3년 간 수백억원의 개발 자금과 수백명의 소프트웨어 인력을 동원해 시스템 개발 및 안정화에 주력해 왔다. 유럽 완성차 업체들도 안드로이드 AVN 시스템을 개발하고 있지만, `세계 최초`라는 타이틀은 현대?기아차에 뺏긴 셈이다.

업계 관계자는 “현대?기아차의 적극적인 개발 의지와 외부 연구개발 생태계가 탄탄하게 구축돼 있어 세계 최초로 안드로이드 AVN 시스템이 국내 완성차 업체에 의해 상용화됐다”며 “해외 완성차 업체들도 시스템을 개발하고 있어 안드로이드가 스마트카 AVN 시스템의 주력 OS 중 하나로 자리잡게 될 것”이라고 밝혔다.
