Small and medium power instrument makers are continually entering the Myanmarese market in order to take the Myanmarese government’s long-term power development plan as a business opportunity.
Bosung Power entered into a contract to supply power transmission tower manufacturing facilities in 2009 and 2011 with MEC, a Myanmarese national steel company, and has already set foot into the market. Following a Myanmarese branch establishment in 2011, the company is promoting the local market entry in full swing. Recently, Bosung Power is preparing a site for its own production plant in an area at a 1.5-hour driving distance from Yangon.
KD Power has been promoting to supply photovoltaic power generation system and DC household appliances since May to suburban areas of Myanmar where the power supply conditions are poor.
For ‘KD Home Energy Storage,’ a solar powered energy storage device for household use, KD Power integrated a photovoltaic power generation facility with an inverter, a storage battery and a switchboard. The company also developed a photovoltaic pump. This pump of 3 ? 5 horsepower is operated with two 250W photovoltaic panels and is charged with an energy storage device (ESS).
Seondo Electric, a company manufacturing switchboards, is preparing to enter Myanmar through supply of materials and equipments to a 600MW power plant project, which is being promoted by Korea Western Power. This is a large-scale project with the amount of orders exceeding $100 million. Seondo Electric is reviewing a plan to build its own production plant in Myanmar in two years’ time.
“Myanmar’s economy is growing rapidly as the natural gas production increases together with foreign investment following the economic reform and market opening,” said an industry insider. “Accordingly, the power demand is increasing and, as a result, power instrument makers are competitively entering the market.”

중소 전력기자재 업체, 기회의 땅 미얀마 `러시`
중소 전력기자재 업체의 미얀마 진출이 잇따르고 있다. 미얀마 정부의 장기전원 개발 계획을 기회로 삼으려는 중소 전력기자재 업체의 이해가 맞아 떨어졌기 때문이다.
보성파워텍은 2009년과 2011년 두 차례에 걸쳐 미얀마 국영철강업체인 MEC와 송전용 철탑 제작설비 공급 계약을 맺으면서 미얀마 시장에 발을 들여놓았다. 2011년 미얀마 지사를 설립한 후 미얀마 진출을 본격화하고 있다. 최근에는 양곤에서 차량으로 1시간 30분 거리에 있는 지역에 자체 생산 공장 부지를 마련 중이다.
케이디파워는 지난 5월부터 전력사정이 좋지 않은 미얀마 외곽 지역에 태양광 발전시스템과 직류(DC) 가전 공급을 추진 중이다.
태양광을 이용한 가정용 에너지 저장장치인 `KD홈 에너지스토리지`는 태양광 발전설비와 인버터, 축전지, 배전반 등을 통합했다. 태양광 펌프도 개발했다. 250W 태양광 패널 두 개로 3~5마력 용량의 펌프를 돌리는 방식이다. 에너지저장장치(ESS)로 충전해서 사용한다.
수배전반 업체인 선도전기는 한국서부발전이 추진 중인 600㎿급 발전소에 기자재를 납품하는 형태로 미얀마 진출을 준비 중이다. 전체 발주 규모만 1억 달러가 넘는 규모다. 2년 후에는 직접 생산 공장을 건설하는 방안도 검토 중인 것으로 알려졌다.
업계 관계자는 “미얀마는 천연가스 생산량이 증가하고 경제 개혁과 개방으로 외국인 투자가 늘어 경제가 급성장하고 있다”며 “이에 따라 전력수요가 크게 늘어나면서 전력기자재 업체들이 앞 다퉈 진출하고 있는 것”이라고 말했다.
