Cheil Industries is about to take over Novaled.
According to the foreign press and the related industry on July 30, Cheil Industries had a plan to finalize the acquisition of Novaled, a German OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) material maker, within the 3rd quarter this year. It has been reported by the foreign press that the local company would undertake the acquisition negotiation as early as this week.?
The Germany-based company is known to have a number of OLED source technology patents and produce OLED core materials, such as PIN (P-doped, Intrinsic, N-doped) which helps the speedy and efficient movement of electrons by adding P-type and N-type devices to HTL (Hole Transfer Layer) and ETL (Electron Transfer Layer).
The acquisition of Novaled by Cheil Industries as one of Samsung’s affiliates is expected to affect Samsung Display and Samsung Electronics. Samsung would be able to take the lead in the patent war against LG and get the upper hand in negotiations later on.
The amount of money to take over the German company would be over USD 200 million (or about KRW 222.7 billion). Back in April when Cheil and Doosan competed with each other to take over Novaled, the acquisition cost surged, nearing as much as KRW 400 billion.
As Doosan, however, dropped out of the competition in May, the price negotiation resumed, decreasing the cost.
“It is true that we are in the process of taking over Novaled. But we cannot disclose details on the negotiation,” says a source from Cheil Industries.

제일모직의 노바엘이디 인수 작업이 막바지 단계에 이르렀다.
30일 외신과 업계에 따르면 제일모직은 3분기 내 독일 유기발광다이오드(OLED) 소재 기업인 노바엘이디(Novaled) 인수를 마무리할 계획이다. 이르면 이번 주 안에 인수 협상을 체결할 것이라는 소식도 외신을 통해 전해졌다.
노바엘이디는 다수의 OLED 원천 특허를 보유한 기업으로 OLED 핵심 소재도 생산한다. 대표 소재는 PIN(P-doped, Intrinsic, N-doped)이라는 소재다. 정공수송층(HTL)과 전자수송층(ETL)에 p형 소자와 n형 소자를 첨가해 전자 이동을 보다 빠르고 원할하게 돕는 역할을 한다.
제일모직은 OLED 소재 사업을 강화하기 위해 노바엘이디 인수를 추진 중이다. 제일모직이 노바엘이디를 인수하면 삼성디스플레이와 삼성전자에도 영향을 미칠 전망이다. 삼성은 LG와 벌이고 있는 특허전에서 확전을 막는 것은 물론이고 향후 협상에서도 유리한 고지를 점할 수 있게 된다.
인수 금액은 2억달러(약 2227억원) 이상이 될 것으로 보인다. 4월 정도까지만 해도 제일모직과 두산이 노바엘이디 인수 경쟁을 벌이면서 인수 금액이 3000억원 후반까지 치솟았다.
지난 5월 두산이 노바엘이디 인수를 포기하면서 이후 가격 협상이 재개돼 인수가가 낮아진 것으로 알려졌다.
제일모직 관계자는 “노바엘이디 인수를 추진 중인 것은 맞다”면서도 “협상에 관한 자세한 사항은 밝힐 수 없다”고 말했다.
