ST Microelectronics are supplying Silicon Carbide (SiC) high-power semiconductor modules to the Kia Electric Vehicle EV6. Hyundai Motor Group Electric Vehicle Platform (E-GMP) additionally applied power semiconductor products.

ST Micro supplied five types of SiC power module products. The EV6 equipped with the module is an electric vehicle model based on the Hyundai Motors E-GMP. It is expected that the supply of the new ST Micro SiC products to Hyundai and Kia’s new vehicles, including the EV6, will expand.

ST Micro SiC semiconductor MOSFET-based power module products supply various operating voltages to the electric vehicle platform application and lowers the power consumption. The SiC power module product increased stability and robustness with precision sintering process technology. Automakers will be able to easily apply it to electric vehicle platforms.

Sang-Cheol Shin, head of the inverter design team at Hyundai Motor Group said, “ST Micro SiC power modules are the optimum solution for traction application inverters that support long distance mileage. We will make significant progress for transitioning to electric vehicles through partnering with ST Micro.”

The new ST Micro power product has decreased in size and power consumption when charging the electric vehicle compared to the previous generation. ST Micro plans to expand the supply of power semiconductor modules for On-Board Chargers (OBC) and electric vehicle traction inverters.

SiC is a semiconductor material that is 10 times stronger and has 3 times higher thermal conductivity than silicon semiconductors. It is attracting attention as the next-generation power semiconductor material that can withstand high voltage and high heat. ST Micro plans to respond quickly to the rapidly expanding electric mobility demand by establishing a SiC production facility in Catania, Italy next year, in response to the market demand. Marco Monti, President of ST Micro Automotive Group revealed, “ST Micro’s third-generation SiC technology ensures the highest power density and energy efficiency, enabling improved vehicle performance, range and charging time.”
