The first battery material factory in abroad… Manufacturing slurry composite material
Long term contract with Northvolt, supplying to Volkswagen·BMW

DONGJIN SEMICHEM is completing their first overseas battery material plant in Sweden. They will build a battery material plant in Gothenburg, Sweden, and target the European EV battery market. In Sweden, demand for battery materials is growing as European battery maker Northvolt is starting to build their battery production plant.

DONGJIN SEMICHEM is planning to start operation of their battery material plant in Gothenburg, Sweden at the end of this year. They started the construction of Gothenburg plant in the first half of last year. The plant will produce slurry composites. It is DONGJIN SEMICHEM’s first overseas battery material plant. It is also the first time for a Korean company to build a battery material plant in Sweden.

Slurry composite material increases the performance of battery materials such as cathode and anode materials. It is a slurry-type composite material that improves battery life and charging performance while increasing the energy efficiency of cathode and anode materials. It is a core material used in battery products including EV and information technology (IT).

One of the reasons DONGJIN SEMICHEM built the Swedish plant is European EV battery market is growing rapidly. According to BloombergNEF, the market research firm, the EV market is expected to expand from 10 million units this year to 60 million units in 2030. Demand for EV battery materials are also growing rapidly. By 2030, cathode and anode materials are expected to expand to 6 million tons and 2.7 million tons, respectively.

DONGJIN SEMICHEM signed a long-term contract with Northvolt for battery materials. Northvolt is expected to grow into the largest EV battery company in Europe as they will soon start to supply EV batteries to global automakers such as Volkswagen, BMW and Volvo.

In order to target European EV battery market including Northvolt, DONGJIN SEMICHEM built a production plant in Sweden. They built a slurry composite material plant near the Northvolt Swedish plant in order to respond to demands of battery including Northvolt.

DONGJIN SEMICHEM is targeting the battery market, where demand is expected to increase such as semiconductors and displays. Last year, their sales exceeded 1 trillion KRW from demand for semiconductor and display materials. It is expected that sales in the battery material sector will increase with the start of operation of the battery material plant along with semiconductors and displays.
