Hyundai Motor Company is planning to equip its next-generation Genesis “G90” with two “LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) sensors that will be the first within the global automotive industry. Two LiDAR sensors will be able to provide the level 3 of autonomous driving along with previous camera and radar sensors and Hyundai’s own control algorithm. New G90 is expected to be an important opportunity for Hyundai Motor Company to grab an upper hand of future autonomous driving technology.
According to the industry, Hyundai Motor Company’s Genesis brand is planning to equip its fully-changed G90 model, which is expected to be released at the end of next year, with a “level 3” autonomous driving system that is made up of cameras and radars and two LiDAR sensors. Mando will supply cameras and radars while LiDAR will be supplied by Velodyne through Hyundai Mobis.
Audi is currently the only global automotive industry that announced that it would equip camera, radar, and LiDAR system, which are a must to implement the level 3 autonomous driving, for “A8”. However, there is a chance that “A8”, which will only have one LiDAR sensor at the front, will have hard time understanding movements of cars on its sides and controlling the vehicle.

On the other hand, the new G90 will have two LiDAR sensors on both sides of its front and implement more advanced autonomous driving technology. They will operate even more accurately under a cloudy weather and handle various unexpected situations even more naturally.
“Although A8 will have better autonomous driving technology on its front side, G90 will be able to implement even more complete level 3 autonomous driving technology such as detecting cars that are trying to cut in.” said Professor Jung Koo-min of Kookmin University’s Electronic Engineering Department. “Because Hyundai Motor Company is taking more initiatives on the level 3 autonomous driving technology than other automotive manufacturers, it will have more advantages in securing an upper hand of autonomous driving technology in the future.”
Hyundai Motor Company combined camera, radar, and LiDAR into single algorithm and developed its own control algorithm that gathers various signals during a drive and makes final decisions. The new G90 will be released globally at the end of next year at the earliest.
“Our new G90 that will be released at the end of next year or early 2022 will be applied with various advanced technologies.” said a representative for Hyundai Motor Company. “However, we cannot disclose any detailed information yet.”
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport is planning to supplement its detailed regulations related to the level 3 autonomous driving technology and introduce standards on automatic lane change step by step. Understanding movements of cars on the sides is a must before introducing standards on automatic lane change. As a result, two LiDAR sensors are expected tol be key sensors that will understand movements of cars on the sides.
