The Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) is planning to start a high-quality evaluation system “next-generation patent website” applied with AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology.
Through AI-based search system and machine translation system, the new website is going to provide a rapid and accurate administrative service and effective management of patents through personalized information.
KIPO (Director Park Won-joo) stated that it will start a next-generation patent website that will establish a high-quality evaluation system, improve electronic application service, and enhance performance of data processing system on the 2nd of March.
The website is a comprehensive information system that computerizes application of industrial property right on patent, utility model, trademark, and design and entire patent-related administrative tasks such as evaluation, judgment, registration, and publication of official returns.
KIPO has been pushing for the development of a next-generation patent website as part of a three-year plan since last year in order to improve the quality of administrative tasks on patent.
In 2020, it has worked on high-quality evaluation system that is applied with latest technologies such as AI and machine learning and enhancement of performance of data processing system based on simplification of formalities and procedures, improve convenience, and open architecture and open software (SW).

Through a trademark search system based on AI, the website is going to provide search results on similar images through machine learning. It is going to automatically extract information such as composition ratio of invented alloy and chemical structure that have been difficult to find and search similar literatures.
Its translation service is also paired with private AI machine translation engines from Google and Kakao and allows reviewers to search any literature without language barrier.
Through application of temporary statement that is expected to be implemented in the first half of this year, the website allows invention and application to take place at the same time. Also, application will be available 24 hours a day due to nonstop online application system.
One can easily check schedules related to patent on his or her smartphone as the website will have its interface completely reorganized.
The website also allows application of latest technologies and maintenance to take place easily as it replaces a system that has been operating on commercial SW with standard technologies and open source-based SW.
“We are planning to establish an AI chatbot system, expand website and mobile application services, and develop a pre-analysis system for application of an invention as we enter the second year of our three-year plan.” said Deputy Department Head Cheon Sae-chang of KIPO. “Our next-generation patent website will be the beginning to development of industrial technologies by providing a high-quality evaluation service while improving the level of convenience with application at the same time.”
