Volkswagen is going to start selling its third-generation electric vehicle called ‘ID3’ at the end of this year. It is expected that a generation of third-generation electric vehicles will arrive in 2020 on full-scale starting with ID3. Third-generation electric vehicle indicates a vehicle that has can drive 500km at the minimum with single charge. There have been competitions for high-energy density batteries within electric vehicle market recently to increase mileage based on single charge. This is the reason why lithium-ion battery as well as other relevant materials, parts, and equipment are drawing more attention.
‘The Electronic Times’ Second Tech Week’, which is a technology conference that views current industrial trends and future technologies, will take place on the 12th for four days. Spectators will be able to observe various trends of next-generation battery market and important technologies regarding electronic parts on the third day of the conference.
President Yoon Yae-seon of SK Innovation’s Battery Business will talk about current trends of electric vehicle battery market and direction of development of SK Innovation’s technologies on this day. SK Innovation is looking to become a top three business in the world within electric vehicle battery market by 2025. After becoming the first business to commercialize NCM622 and NCM811 in 2014 and 2018 respectively, it is also set to become first business in the world to commercialize NCM91/21/2, which is a next-generation battery technology, in 2021.
Strategy Marketing Executive Director Michael Son of Samsung SDI’s Battery Department will be a speaker for Samsung SDI. Samsung SDI is planning to talk about direction of development of next-generation high-energy density electric vehicle battery cell as it prepares for Auto 2.0 generation.
Innovative materials are a must to develop high-energy density batteries. Director Seo Joon-won of ECOPRO BM, which is South Korea’s biggest anodic material manufacturer, is planning to talk about ‘current trend of development of high-nickel anodic material’. ECOPRO BM is world’s first business to develop NCM811 anodic material.

There will be presentations about silicon cathodic material that is aimed by next-generation battery manufacturers. Executive Director Oh Sung-min of Dae Joo Electronic Materials’ Cathodic Material Business Department is going to talk about ‘current status of development of high-efficient silicon oxide cathodic material’. Because silicon’s capacity is four times bigger than that of graphite, it is more useful in improving mileage of an electric vehicle by expanding battery capacity.
CTO Jeon Sang-hyun of KCFT is going to talk about ‘thinnest, longest, widest copper foil for battery’. Copper foil for battery is used as a current collector for cathode of a secondary battery and it is seen as an important material for expanding battery capacity and making batteries lighter as it can fill more cathodic active materials as it becomes thinner.
Panax E-Tec, which is South Korea’s biggest electrolyte manufacturer, is going to talk about high-performance electrolyte and additives for lithium-ion battery of an electric vehicle. Electrolyte allows lithium-ions to move between cathode and anode and it improves battery performance and extends battery life.
There will be sessions on next-generation batteries. Manager Kim Hak-soo of CIS Laboratory is going to talk about current status of commercialization of solid electrolyte for next-generation all-solid-state batteries. H2 is going to talk about current trend of ESS (Energy Storage System) market based on VRFB (Vanadium Redox Flow Battery), which recently passed Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy’s regulatory sandbox.
There will also be sessions related to camera parts that are emerging as major part of next-generation Smartphones. Chief Researcher Kim Young-woon of LG Innotek’s Optical Advanced Development Office is going to talk about ‘current trend of 3D sensing technology’ while Director Kim Dae-shik of Samsung Electro-Mechanics’ Camera Module Advanced Development Group is going to talk about ‘current trend of technologies on Smartphone camera’.
