LG Innotec is introducing an unconventional promotion system called ‘self-recommendation for promotion’. Regardless of how long a person worked, he or she can decide on the timing for promotion and receive evaluation.
This system is LG Innotec’s attempt to expand options of members of LG Innotec from duties to rankings. It is drawing much attention because LG Innotec is the only one within LG Group attempting this system.
LG Innotec announced on the 14th that it will be applying’self-recommendation for promotion’ for every employees in administrative and technical departments starting from early 2018.
In other words, this system allows one to recommend himself or herself as a potential candidate for promotion. For example, previously one was given a chance for promotion after serving as a ‘senior (assistant manager or section head)’ for 8 years. An employee could also be selected early through recommendations from his or her immediate team leader.
However starting from next year, every employees of LG Innotec in administrative and technical departments can put their names as candidates for potential promotion regardless of how long they worked or if they received recommendations from team leaders or not. Even if they were promoted to ‘senior’ position this year, they can apply for ‘person in charge’ position, which is the rank higher, next year.
“We have decided to introduce ‘self-recommendation for promotion’ in order to provide more equal opportunities to employees regarding promotion and to respect our employees’ options on development of their careers.” said a representative for LG Innotec.

LG Innotec’s employees can manage their careers according to their individual plans by deciding on the timing for promotion on their own and employees who are not quite ready for promotion can also reduce amount of stress that they may receive from rejection by postponing evaluations.
This system has LG Innotec’s intention to promote more professional and adventurous people.
Its plan is to build professionalism and efficiency of the company by giving bigger responsibilities to employees who are ready.
This system is only introduced by LG Innotec.
In June of last year, LG Innotec completely abolished salary step system for employees who are in production and has carried out a system that is similar to employees who are in administrative and technical departments. It is attempting to establish a personnel system based on capabilities and results.
Abolishment of salary step system was a first attempt by a large South Korean business with an union. At that time, LG Innotec established a ‘promotion by selection’ that will allow one to promote depending on his or her job abilities.
“Employees’ will and passion are our main priorities.” said a representative for LG Innotec. “While providing opportunities for our employees so that they can freely grow, we are going to create a personnel system that is sympathized by everyone through a fair and transparent personnel management.”
In order to create a horizontal, creative, and free organizational culture, LG Innotec reduced five positions that were centered on seniority to three positions of employee, senior, and person in charge depending on their roles in July of last year.
