SK Telecom is planning to form cooperation with major global mobile telecommunication businesses and equipment manufacturers to standardize 5G.
AT&T, Deutsche Telekom, China Mobile, NTT DOCOMO, Vodafone, Ericsson, Nokia, Samsung Electronics, Huawei, Intel, Qualcomm, and LG Electronics are going to participate in this cooperation. Fact that major businesses have formed a large cooperation with 3GPP, which is an international group for standardization, set to establish first 5G standards in 2018 is drawing attention on this cooperation’s movement in the future.
Cooperation is going to discuss about standards and apply results to 3GPP. It is going to discuss about linkage between 5G and current network including 4G LTE, standards for early 5G, and directions for development of technologies. SK Telecom is planning to suggest standards to other participating businesses within this cooperation.
SK Telecom has been co-developing equipment for 5G and corresponding technologies with major equipment manufacturers. It has participated in OPNFV (Open Platform for NFV), which is a group that standardizes open platforms, and has started virtualized platform advisory group called EUAG (End User Advisory Group). It announced its plans on R&D on 5G based on virtualization.
“It is necessary to discuss and agree with variety of cooperation to successfully commercialize 5G and develop technologies in medium and long-term.” said Director Park Jin-hyo of SK Telecom’s Network Technology Institute. “We are going to faithfully perform our roles related to commercialization and demonstration of 5G including discussion about 5G standards.”
