YMK Photonics Co., Ltd., which is a start-up company, is commercializing PIC (Photonic Integrated Circuit) that is seen as a next-generation semiconductor.
YMK Photonics Co., Ltd. made an announcement that it is preparing to commercialize PIC by working with LioniX International from Netherland. LioniX International has LioniX, SatraX, and Xio Photonics that possess PIC technologies and OctroliX that manages patents as its subsidiaries. YMK and Panthera Group, which is a technology investment venture capital in Netherland, purchased these subsidiaries and established a holding company called LioniX International.
PIC sends and receives data through light instead of electric signal. While speed of sending data through electric signal b using copper wire is hundreds of Mbps per line, this speed increases to tens of Gbps if light is used. LioniX possesses optical waveguide technology that minimizes losses from transmission and connection and has an ability to implement complicated circuits.

YMK is going to start developing a prototype of multi-beam forming phased array antenna module for 5G and is planning to carry out regular business activities by targeting global wireless telecommunication companies in next year. “When we finish developing a prototype, we are going to transfer processes, establish plans for mass-production, and respond to demands by working with Korea Advanced Nano Fab Center that is located in Gwanggyo Techno Valley.
YMK Photonics Co., Ltd. is planning to increase its product line by developing HUD (Head-Up Display) for vehicles, laser projector, lidar sensor for self-driving cars, and small optical gyro-sensor with high performance in the future.
“We can now commercialize high-tech PIC even earlier with YMK Photonics Co., Ltd.’s partnership.” said Chairman Hans of LioniX International.
“This is an investment that was made to make a strategic partner rather than being a simple financial investment.” said Chairman Kim Yeong-mo of YMK Holdings. “We are going to grow as a global business in PIC semiconductor industry by developing leading products.”
