LG Display is preparing 5th Generation OLED Production Line for lighting in Gumi. It is going to mass-produce 15,000 OLEDs per month in first half which is world’s biggest size.

LG Display (CEO Han Sang-bum (Vice-Chairman)) made an announcement on the 17th that LG Display is going to invest in new 5th Generation OLED Lines for lighting in Gumi to vitalize economy in surrounding area and to lead OLED lighting markets.

Standard of a board is going to be 5th generation (1000x1200mm), and its output is about 30 times more than current output. LG Display is predicting that it will be able to secure competitive edge in price by putting sizeable economy into effect. It is going to maximize efficiency in investments by utilizing factories in Gumi that are deteriorated. It has not yet to decide on which line it is going to switch over to 5th generation.

All of LG Chemicals’ businesses that are related to OLED were transferred to LG Display in December of last year, and LG Display has been preparing next businesses for OLED lighting. OLED lighting is a technology that utilizes organic material’s luminous characteristic and has lesser electricity consumption and heating compared to current lighting. It is eco-friendly and is close to being natural light. Because it can increase level of usage of lighting by implementing transparent and flexible designs, it can create variety of markets.

Based on production capability and technical know-how in OLED display that LG Display has been accumulating, it is going to display synergy in lighting business. It is hoping that by providing vehicle displays and OLED lighting as a total solution, it will be able to find new customers and create high-added values.

“OLED lighting business will be an opportunity that will strengthen competitive edge towards customers and OLED market that is being promoted by LG Display as its future driving force.” said Executive Director Song Young-kwon who is the Director of LG Display’s Strategy and Marketing Group. “We are going to secure top position in OLED markets.”

Market research company called Ubi Research is estimating that value of OLED lighting markets will grow from $135 million in 2016 to $1.6 billion in 2020.
