Era of eMMC Is Coming to an End

Followed by Samsung Electronics’ Memory Business Department, SK Hynix has also made supply agreements for UFS (Universal Flash Storage) Chips and is preparing to mass-produce UFS Chips.

World’s biggest and 4th biggest businesses in NAND-Flash Memory market are going to start mass-producing UFS Chips on full-scale. Due to mass-production of UFS Chips by prominent NAND-Flash memory businesses, changes in standards for Smartphones’ storing devices are expected. It is predicted that premium Smartphones with UFS Chips as their storing devices will appear one after the other starting from second half of this year.

According to an industry on the 3rd, SK Hynix has mass-produced 64GB UFS 2.0 Chips starting from January and is planning to supply them to its customers at least by April. In second half of last year, SK Hynix had produced and supplied small amount of 32GB UFS 2.0 Chips to its customers. By mass-producing 64GB UFS 2.0 Chips, it expects that not only lineups will be expanded but it will also able to increase its sales. SK Hynix is planning to expand its lineup with products with high capacity on full-scale and increase number of customers.

Currently Samsung Electronics is the leader in UFS market. After introducing 128GB UFS 2.0 Chips last year, Samsung Electronics’ Memory Business Department had recently introduced 256GB Chips and has started supplying them. Toshiba and Micron are yet to show any sign of significant results or performance in UFS field. Although Toshiba had introduced some samples in the past, it has yet to supply any chips. Micron has yet to even introduce any samples.

UFS is a technology that has both characteristics of fast speed from SSD (Solid State Drive) and low power from eMMC (embedded Multi-Media Card). Theoretically, UFS 2.0 can send up to 1.2GB per second (while using both 600MB/s bandwidth lanes at the same time), which is about 3 times faster than eMMC 5.0 that can send up to 400GB per second. Consumption rate of power is about the same between UFS and eMMC.

Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy S series are the main ones that have UFS Chips as their storing devices. Instead of eMMC, UFS was used for Galaxy S6 that was released last year as well as for Galaxy S7 series. It is heard that some Chinese Smartphone businesses, which are aiming for high performance their Smartphones, received small amount of supply of UFS Chips as well. UFC market will begin to grow starting from second half of this year.

According to an industry, about 20 major Smartphone suppliers are planning to use UFS rather than eMMC for their premium products. This indicates that practically all Smartphone businesses that are known to public have decided to use UFS. Currently there aren’t many Smartphones that have UFS Chips. However memory industry is expecting that UFC market will grow tremendously in second half of this year.

According to a market research company called IHS, UFC Controller and eMMC will take up 10% and 90% respectively in this year’s Smartphone storing device markets. Percentage for UFC Controller will grow to 26% by 2019.

“It seems like market research company’s values came out too conservatively based on Smartphone manufacturers’ plans on using UFS Chips.” said a representative for this industry.
