Samsung SDI introduced battery cell technology with high energy density that lasts 600km with just 1 charge for electric vehicles. It was able to increase mileage of a cell, which lasts about 500km and is introduced to global markets as a sample type, by about 20%.
Samsung SDI introduced prototype of a battery, which lasts up to 600km with just 1 charge, at ‘2016 Detroit Motor Show’ that was held at Detroit Cobo Center on the 11th (US time).
This battery has 20 to 30% higher energy density and mileage than current cell with 500km mileage, which is currently the most mileage technically. Samsung SDI is planning to mass-produce this battery in 2020.
Samsung SDI also introduced ‘Ultra-Slim Battery Pack for EV (Electric Vehicle)’ that greatly reduces current battery size and ‘LVS (Low-Voltage System) Solution’ that improves eco-friendly function and fuel efficiency of a normal car at the same time.
Ultra-Slim Battery Pack (low height pack) is a compact-type that reduces height of a current pack for EV by 20 to 30%. “It is much easier to apply it to current electric vehicles and it will push forward EV System Platform since it is possible to mass-produce and reduce production cost.” said a person related to Samsung SDI.
Samsung SDI also put out LVS Solution that can be applied to normal cars. It is a system that can replace lead storage battery with a lithium-ion battery or add lithium-ion battery to lead storage battery.
While there are environmental issues regarding exhaust gases, LVS can improve mileage at least by 3% and at most by 20%. It is receiving spotlight as a response towards environmental regulations regarding reduction of carbon dioxide, and there are high demands for it from consumers and finished vehicle businesses with North America at the center.
“We are going to speed up our processes going after global vehicle markets including North American markets with battery cells with high energy density along with Ultra-Slim Battery Pack and LVS Solution.” said President Cho Nam-seong of Samsung SDI.
