Samsung Electronics is promoting its Smart TV OS ‘Tizen’ as hub for IoT generation. With release of IoT household appliances approaching, Samsung Electronics is putting Tizen TV on the center of Smart Home and maximizing level of convenience by using analysis of Cloud and Big Data.

According to Samsung Electronics on the 11th, Tizen will become ‘Cloud-based streaming platform’ next year. Tizen was installed in every Samsung Electronics’ Smart TVs this year and replaced current Smart Hub. It helped Samsung Electronics defend its number 1 title in global Smart TV markets by receiving praise for mobile equipment and linkage such as intuitive user experience (UX), Smartphones and others. Not only did Samsung’s Smart TVs remain at the top in South Korea, they maintained their top positions in China and North America as well.

First of all, ‘Interactive’ function that strengthens bilateralness is receiving attention. It enables one to watch a TV in multiple ways by combining with chatting, messenger, and SNS that are based on bilateralness instead of unidirectional broadcasting. Tizen OS, which based on HTML 5, can easily develop and apply variety of applications, and this is why many developers can make a lot of programs that can be used to watch contents.

‘Time Shift’ function, which enables one to watch TV screen on mobile equipment such as Smartphones and others, is also receiving attention. Through implementation of personal N-Screen, it allows one to use a personal Tizen TV wherever internet is connected ultimately. If current TVs only showed information after receiving it, future Tizen TVs share those information after receiving and inputting them.

Next year will be the first year when Tizen TV emerges as a hub for IoT. Samsung Electronics chose ‘On (always on)’, ‘Connected (connectivity)’, and ‘Sensing (sensor recognition)’ as 3 directivities. Hardware (HW) management for securing equipment’s safety, software (SW) platform focused on strengthening on security, connection that guarantees easy connection and compatibility, and voice and expression recognition command using sensors will be provided.

Through these, TV manages and controls IoT equipment’s information that gathers into Cloud within Smart Home. Samsung Electronics will expand household appliances with Tizen OS in next year starting with refrigerators. Smart Things products that enable Smart functions on non-electric equipment such as lamps, windows and others will be introduced to consumers in first half of 2016. Securing of connectivity between safe equipment and optimized IoT integrated management will be shown through Tizen TV.

Cloud is used as an important tool to implement personal Smart TV and predicts customers’ intentions by analyzing Big Data of users’ atypical aspect of using TVs. Tizen TV understands individual’s preference, recommends corresponding contents, and analyzes individual’s tendency and profile. Samsung Electronics is preparing for related functions by analyzing voice commands by using Nuance Communications’ voice recognition solution and others.
