LG Electronics and Yonsei University had applied 2 x 2 multi-antennas (2 transmitter and 2 receiver antennas) technologies to their multi-antennas-based full-duplex communication. Data that is received and transmitted increase proportionally to number of antennas, and it is theoretically possible to have up to 8 x 8. If full-duplex communication is combined to multi-antennas, volume of data that is received and transmitted increase by twice, which means that volume of data that is received and transmitted in 8 x 8 can be 16 times of that to regular LTE.

Research team had focused on solving interference with frequencies that usually happen when many antennas are used. By doing so it was able to implement communication technologies that are fast in any communication situation and show stable and efficient frequencies. In a situation where resource for frequencies are limited and auctions that worth billions of dollars are happening, it will be able to create an economic value worth billions of dollars by increasing efficiency of frequencies.

“Through a successful demonstration, we were able to prove that LG Electronics’ technologies related to 5G are excellent once again. We will be able to up our influence during upcoming steps to standardize 5G technologies.” said Manager Kwak Kook Yeon of LG Electronics’ CTO Department’s Laboratory for next-generation standards.

Professor Chae Chang Byung’s research team had demonstrated full-duplex communication technology in real-time at Communication Conference Globe Com, which was held at Austin, Texas at the end of last year, supervised by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). It is also planning to demonstrate its multi-antennas-based full-duplex communication technology at the same conference at the end of this year.
