Samsung Electronics developed a film, which has similar functions as Quantum Dot (QD) but with greatly reduced production cost, and is out to commercialize this product. Along with SUHD TV that has current QD technology, its plan is to increase sales and profitability at the same time using ‘Two-Track’ strategy.

According to industry, Samsung Electronics and Samsung Display developed separate color-corrected film recently instead of expensive QD film. After receiving new material from global business called ‘A’, SKC Haas provides them after making them in a form of a sheet.

“Color-corrected film that Samsung developed is a sheet that uses organic material. Although its functions are a lot lower than QD film, it can greatly reduce production cost. It seems that it will be first used on 55-inch TV panel.” A person in the industry described about this new products and its advantage and disadvantage.

It is known that this new color-corrected film is about 6 dollars for 55-inch, whereas current QD film easily goes over 100 dollars. Also it costs a lot if QD were to properly use its functions. Although QD maximizes color reproduction range, it relatively reduces contrast level. To supplement this, industry adds LED to backlight unit or uses additional parts such as color-corrected filter. This acts as a main cause that increases production cost.

It is known that this development was mainly led by Samsung Electronics. Along with current QD, its strategy is to diversify products and increase profitability by using ‘Dual Premium’ strategy.

Instead of film method, Samsung Display is developing a method that increases color reproduction range by mixing QD material into color filter process. LCD color filter is a thin-film-type optical part that materializes color in liquid crystal display. Samsung Display is currently researching technology that does not require additional film by applying QD material into color filter process. It is predicted that it will take about 2 to 3 years to commercialize this technology.
