Samsung Electronics along with Korean wireless providers are opening world’s first wireless 1 Gbps generation. ‘Multi-Path TCP (MP TCP)’, which is an internetwork at the same time as it is a transmission technology, can theoretically provide mobile communication that is 15 times faster than current LTE. They secure a bridgehead towards 5G network, and it is predicted that this will bring a serial impact on contents and other industries due to its fast wireless transmission of bulk data.

According to communication industry, Samsung Electronics is currently preparing firmware update to materialize MP TCP onto Galaxy S6. Firmware is a type of software that increases equipment’s performance by controlling basic operation of hardware and updating it.

MP TCP is a technology that can greatly increase data transmission speed by using LTE network and Wi-Fi network at the same time. If 3-Band Carrier Aggregation (CA) that can produce max speed of 300 Mbps and two Giga Wi-Fi that can produce max speed of 866.7 Mbps are tied together, they can theoretically produce max download speed of 1.17 Gbps. This is a same concept as making two 1-way streets into a 2-way street.

It is so fast that it only takes 8.5 seconds to download 1 GB data. 3-Band CA, which was the fastest communication technology that was commercialized till this day, takes 28 seconds. Multi-Path is 3 times faster than 3-Band CA and 15.6 times faster than regular LTE (75 Mbps).

Multi-Path technology provides excellent performance not just in a theory, but in real life too. It was measured that it can provide 600 Mbps if one was to use it by him or herself under base station. It is predicted that it provides 300~400 Mbps under normal circumstances, which is 4 times compared to LTE.

If Multi-Path is materialized onto Galaxy S6 through firmware update, it can be seen as world’s first 1 Gbps generation is being opened. Although it cannot provide 1 Gbps at the moment, it provides a bridgehead to 1 Gbps by securing a theoretical possibility. Multi-Path being an important technology that can make 5G come true, it will provide favorable spot in global competition of 5G. Because only Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge are the only phones that can implement this technology, Multi-Path will work as a favorable factor in cell phone sales too.

SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus have finished preparing for communication network to commercialize Multi-Path which is a national standard technology. It is known that these mobile carriers are coming up with a name for Multi-Path service before they release this service. It is predicted that they will name it ‘LTE+X’ considering it is an improved technology of LTE. If Multi-Path becomes commercialized through Galaxy S6, this will bring growth of contents industries and downstream industries together because Multi-Path can transmit bulk data faster than current technology.
