Majority Patents Samsung Purchased Last 3years Were Semiconductor

The Samsung Electronics Future Technology IP Portfolio is diversifying, since strategic patent purchases have been greatly reinforced. Last year, Samsung greatly increased patent purchases in new areas such as △Radio Wave Antenna △Organic Material △Data Processing: Vehicles.

According to the IPnomics Report, ‘Samsung, what are they concerned about?’ jointly published by The Electronics Times Future Technology Research Center(ETRC) and Gwanggaeto Research Institute, a company specialized in patent analysis, Samsung purchased a total of 227 patents last year.

Among those patent purchases, 50 were related to radio wave antenna, 33 to remote communication, 15 to organic material, and 10 to data processing for vehicles. Other than these, patents in over 40 technological groups(USPC Class Tille standard) were purchased.

Samsung reinforced their technical skills by buying up a total of over 2590 patents in the past 10 years(2005~2014). Patents related to semiconductors—including △Static Information Storage And Retrieval △ Active Solid-State Devices △ Semiconductor Device Manufacturing— took up a major proportion, with over 1000 patents.

The majority of the patents that Samsung purchased in the last three years(2012~2014) were also semiconductor patents, with 70 on active solid-stat components, 53 on computer processor architecture, 36 on semiconductor processing, etc. The ranking is pretty much identical with that of which Samsung has bought for the last 10 years.

However, patent purchases in new areas such as radio wave antenna, materials, data processing for vehicles, batteries, optical technology, nano technology, etc. have begun recently.

Such a trend was much more reinforced last year. In fact, among a total of 51 patents on radio wave antenna purchased in the last 10 years, 50 were bought in the past year. 24 patents on data processing for vehicles were also purchased in the last 3 years starting from 2012. Likewise, all of 41 patents on nano graphene used in Lithium-ion batteries were purchased in the past three years.

Besides these, for over 30 technologies, the rate of purchases in the past three years were over 50%. These technologies are the technical areas that Samsung strategically pays attention to.

The 30 technical areas in which Samsung recently increased purchases in include △Radio Wave Antenna △Data Processing: Vehicles △Optical Wave(Optical Fiber) △Synthetic Resins and Gum Elastic △Radiation Energy △Materials △Nano Graphene △Metal Process △Digital Processing System △Batteries △Vehicle Motor △LCD Cell △Image Analysis △Information Security △Lighting △Virtualization Technology.

Although the number of patent purchases in these fields are smaller than that of semiconductor patents, through them, we can tell where Samsung is heading. Concerning patent purchases, we can see that Samsung has quickly shifted from the existing fields, such as semiconductors, to new areas.
