<100 global MS network companies by region and industry>
Over the last ten years, Microsoft (MS)’s patents have been omi-directionally citied by communications and network companies. The large number of patent citations, which reflects the respective companies’ technological dependence, means that the influence of MS’s patents on the companies is large. It has been found that even companies from Asia and Europe, which have emerged as new mobile phone production bases, as well as North America are under MS’s extensive network of mobile IP influence.
According to the IPnomics report titled ‘Will there be a Big Bang impacting the mobile ecosystem?’ published by the Electronic Times Future Technology Research Center (ETRC) and the KwangGaeTo Lab (CEO Kang Min-soo), ‘The 100 Companies in Global MS Patent Network’ included 78 companies from North American region. 22 companies were from Europe and Asia.
By industry, the largest number is IT and Internet service companies (23). It was followed by electronic component makers (16), communications equipment and software makers (11 each), entertainment companies (10) and mobile phone makers (8). As such, companies from various industries are included.
By region, companies recording large numbers of MS patent citations in North American region are IT and Internet service companies (22) like Facebook, Amazon, Google and Apple. On the other hand, in Asia and Europe, the largest number was electronic component makers (10), such as Hitachi, Sony and Philips. As for Korean companies, Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics were included in the 100 Companies in Global MS Patent Network. From China, Huawei is included.
For ‘the 100 Companies in Global MS Patent Network’ 100 companies of which the number of MS patent citations increased rapidly over the last three years were selected from global companies in North America, Europe and Asia. These companies are under MS’ powerful patent influence, and thus are highly likely to be exposed to MS’ IP license strategies directly and indirectly. Therefore, once MS embarks on an patent attack targeting Android smart phone markers together with Nokia it has recently acquired, the dynamics of global mobile OS market can change at once.

<글로벌 MS 특허네트워크 기업 100선 권역별, 업종별 분포도>
지난 10년간 마이크로소프트(이하 MS) 특허는 통신 및 네트워크 업체들로부터 전방위적으로 인용됐다. 기술적 의존도를 반영하는 ‘특허 인용수’가 많은 것은 해당 기업에 대한 MS 특허 영향력이 크다는 의미다. 북미 지역을 중심으로 신흥 휴대폰 생산 기지로 떠오른 아시아 및 유럽 기업들까지 MS가 구축한 광범위한 모바일 IP 영향권에 들어있는 것으로 나타났다.
전자신문 미래기술연구센터(ETRC)와 특허분석 전문기업인 광개토연구소(대표 강민수)가 공동 발행한 IP노믹스(IPnomics) 보고서 ‘모바일 생태계 빅뱅오나?’에 따르면 ‘글로벌 MS 특허 네트워크 기업 100선’에 북미 지역은 총 78개 기업이 속했다. 아시아 및 유럽 지역도 총 22개 기업이 포함됐다.
업종별로는 IT 및 인터넷서비스업체(23개사)가 가장 많았으며 그 다음으로 △전자부품(16개사) △통신장비(11개사) 및 소프트웨어(11개사) △엔터테인먼트(10개사) △휴대폰(8개사) 등 다양한 업종의 기업들이 광범위하게 포함됐다.
또 지역별로 북미 지역에서 MS 특허 인용이 많은 기업은 페이스북, 아마존, 구글, 애플 등 IT 및 인터넷 서비스(22개) 기업들이다. 반면에 아시아 및 유럽 지역은 히타치, 소니, 필립스 등 전자부품업체(10개)가 가장 많다. 또 국내기업은 삼성전자와 LG전자가 MS 특허 네트워크 기업 100선에 들어갔으며, 중국기업으로는 화웨이가 포함됐다.
‘글로벌 MS 특허 네트워트 100선’은 북미?유럽?아시아 지역 등 글로벌 기업 가운데 최근 3년간 MS 특허 인용도가 급증한 상위 100대 기업을 추출했다. 이들 기업은 MS의 강력한 특허 영향권에 속해 향후 MS의 직?간접적인 IP라이선스 전략에 노출될 가능성이 높다. 따라서 MS가 최근 인수한 노키아와 함께 안드로이드 진영 스마트폰 업체를 상대로 특허 공세에 나설 경우, 글로벌 모바일 OS시장 판도는 한순간에 바뀔 수 있다.
