Nokia is highly likely to use top 11 technology groups for its patent offensive. There are many technologies in each group, and recently the number of cited patents is sharply increasing.
According to the IPnomics report titled “What is Nokia aiming at?” published by the Electronic Times Future Technology Research Center (ETRC) and the KwangGaeTo Lab (CEO Kang Min-soo), a patent analysis specialist, Nokia’s attack risks are high in the following technology groups: △transmission of digital information (1452) △wireless communication networks (904) △ digital data processing (730) △ telephonic communications (513) △ transmission (486).
These technologies are commonly included in the following three areas: △ technologies with most often cited Nokia patents △ technologies with Nokia patent citations sharply rising △ most numerous Nokia patents.
That there are many ‘patent’ citations, which reflects dependency on technologies means that they are highly related with Nokia patents. It is not unrelated to the possibility of disputes. Accordingly, Nokia is most likely to use the ‘top 11 attack risks’ for its patent offensive. It means that Nokia has not filed any lawsuit yet, but it is highly likely to attack pretty soon.
Among them, transmission of digital information was cited most frequently (10,793 times) in the past 10 years. The data processing systems segment accounts for the most of patent citations (64.4%) in the past 3 years. It means that Nokia built a powerful IP portfolio in all mobile phone areas. In particular, mobile phone areas, such as digital information transmission and wireless communication networks, are the No. 1 cause for alarm.
Mobile phone manufacturing technologies are also widely used by communication service providers and equipment makers. If Nokia patent disputes begin in earnest, it is highly likely that lawsuits will be filed not only in the information and communication segment, but also the healthcare, electronic parts and financial segment that utilized Nokia patents indirectly.

노키아가 특허 공세에 활용할 가능성이 높은 11개(톱11)의 기술군이 있다. 각 군별로 보유한 기술도 많고 최근 들어 특허인용 사례도 급증하고 있다.
전자신문 미래기술연구센터(ETRC)와 특허분석 전문기업인 광개토연구소(대표 강민수)가 공동 발행한 IP노믹스(IPnomics) 보고서 ‘노키아, 어디를 정조준하나?’에 따르면 노키아 공격 리스크가 높은 기술군은 △디지털 정보 전송(1452건) △무선통신 네트워크(904건) △디지털 데이터 처리(730건) △전화통신(513건) △전송(486건) 등으로 분석됐다.
이들 기술은 △특허 다인용 △특허 인용 급증 △다보유 특허 등 3개 영역에 공통적으로 포함된다.
기술적 의존도를 반영하는 ‘특허 인용 수’가 많은 것은 노키아 특허와 관련성이 높다는 의미다. 이는 특허분쟁 가능성과 무관하지 않다. 따라서 ‘공격 리스크 톱11’은 노키아가 특허 공세에 활용할 가능성이 가장 높다. 아직 소송은 발생하지 않았지만 머지않아 공격 가능성이 높다는 의미다.
이 중 디지털 정보 전송은 지난 10년간 인용수(1만793건)가 압도적으로 많다. 데이터 처리 시스템 부문은 최근 3년간 인용 비중(64.4%)이 가장 높다. 노키아가 휴대폰 전체 영역에서 강력한 IP 포트폴리오를 구축했다는 의미다. 특히 디지털 정보 전송과 무선통신 네트워크 등 휴대폰 분야는 경계 대상 1순위다.
휴대폰 제조 역시 통신서비스 및 장비업체까지 전방위적으로 활용된다. 노키아 특허 분쟁이 본격화하면 정보통신 영역뿐 아니라 노키아 특허를 간접적으로 활용한 헬스케어, 전자부품, 금융 영역까지 소송이 번질 가능성도 높다.
