Asian companies from Korea, China and Japan have emerged as ‘big players’ in the global mobile game market. Korea and China, especially, have been displaying rapid growth by defeating their North American and European counterparts with a strategy to link mobile messaging platform with games.

According to market surveyors including Niko on the 18th, three companies each from Korea and Japan were ranked in the top ten global Google Play sales as of May this year. As such, Korea and Japan occupy more than half of the top ten positions.

Gungho Online Entertainment’s ‘Puzzle and Dragons is ranked the first and it is followed by Finland’s ‘Clash of Clans.’ Mobile games from Korean companies, such as 4:33 Creative Lab, SundayToz and Line, are ranked in the 4th, 7th and 9th positions respectively, and thus are functioning as mainstays in the global mobile game market.

The rise of Asian mobile games, such as from Korea and Japan, also draws attention from the standpoint that nine out of ten weighty acquisitions that took place in the global game industry were by Asian companies. As an example, SoftBank, a mobile carrier, took over 51% shares of Finland’s Supercell in October last year and China’s Tencent invested KRW 72 billion and KRW 530 billion to Kakato Talk and NETMARBLE respectively in March this year.

In addition, as Alibaba, an e-commerce company from China, came forward as an investor in Kabam, a mobile game developer in the U.S., the game fever from China is forecast to begin full scale.

The number of Chinese game users as of the first half of this year is estimated to be more than 400 million. In particular, the user count for mobile game market is estimated as 330 million, which grew by as much as 89.5%. Chinese mobile games’ market share has increased by 17.7% from the same period last year to 25.2%.

The war of three countries, Korea, China and Japan, is on centering on the mobile platform. Growth strategies of companies from the three countries are forecast to be continued for some time in the future. In particular, rapid progress of Alibaba, which has announced a plan to invest $120 million to Kabam, is expected.

◇ Platform-based mobile games making a giant leap

The foothold for growth of domestic mobile game developers, such as 4:33 Creative Lab, SundayToz and Line, is the companies’ competitive power. These platforms could secure popularity of their games from the existing users by integrating game function to mobile messaging applications like Kakao Talk and Line. Kakao’s game function started the era of games for enjoyment by people of all ages as based on the integration between games from game developers with Kakao’s great popular appeal.

Platform-based strategy also seems to spread in China. Xiaomi, which has become a global sensation with smart phones, began mobile game platform business. Accordingly, various routes for entry to the Chinese market are forecast to open for Korean companies. Xiaomi is scheduled to open a game center in ‘MiTalk, a mobile messenger developed exclusively for Xiami phone, within the year.

◇ China’s Alibaba also on the move, market restructured to a triangle led by Korea, China and Japan

Alibaba has also entered the market. According to Jinghua Shibao, a Chinese press, Alibaba announced to invest $120 million to ‘Kabam,’ a U.S. game developer, at the ‘China Joy 2014’ held earlier this month in China. Alibaba will service Kabam’s games using mobile game platforms from ‘Laiwang,’ a messenger application the company has independently developed, and ‘Taobao,’ the largest online shopping mall in China.

Alibaba expressed an intention to continuously invest in mobile game market following the investment in Kabam. This is forecast to produce synergy as Taobao also holds 700 million members.

The market value of Kabam, in which Alibaba invests, is $1 billion (approximately KRW 1,032.5 billion). Last year, two of Kabam’s games were ranked within the top ten iPhone OS (operating system) sales. The company’s sales last year are $360 million. Having achieved a 100% growth from the previous year, Kabam is evaluated as the pick of the crop.
