Korean hackers competed in the final round of the Defcon Capture the Flag (CTF) for the first time in Asian teams. This is the first time a Koran team made to the final round.

`The East Sea` team of Korean hackers joined the final round of the Defcon 2006 held from Aug. 4 through 6 in Las Vegas, U.S., and won the 6th place after competing with teams of hackers from 200 countries around the world.

The team is named after the East Sea of Korea, and consists of four members, Vangelis, operator of Security Proof (http://www.securityproof.org), Lee Byeong-young from Postech, Choi Sang-myeong from the Graduate School of Information Security at Sooncheonhyang Univ. and Ha Dong-ju from Padocon.

The Korean team used only four notebook computers against the U.S. team equipped with server-scale computers, and successfully found vulnerabilities of the opponents` servers.

The event has been held for 14 years, inviting world`s top hackers and information security experts. CTF is a highlight of the event, where national teams compete for the world championship of hacking. Teams compete to find the other’s security flaws and attack the loopholes.

"While we are in competition at home, we successfully joined hands to make a great team together," said Vangelis, leader of the team. "We could promote Korea`s world`s leading hacking and security capabilities to the world, helping domestic information security firms expand into overseas markets."
