KT, the largest telecommunication service and DSL provider in Korea, selected Redback Networks as a supplier of SER systems for installing its new network infrastructure. As VDSL equipment supplier, KT has chosen Tellion.

Sources from KT and the industry said on Wednesday that Redback Networks was selected as a supplier of SER systems by KT in a competition with Juniper Networks. In benchmarking tests participated by four vendors including Redback, Juniper, Cisco Systems, and Cosine Communications, the first two companies passed the test.

Winning the order for the first SER solution installation project worth 5 billion won (approximately 4.31 million dollars), Redback Networks will supply its ‘SmartEdge Service Gateway’ solutions to KT to be installed in North and South Chungcheong provinces.

After completing the first project by September 15, KT will set up SER systems in other parts of the country, except for the Seoul metropolitan area and Busan, by the end of this year, and install the same systems in the rest of regions by early months of next year, with a total budget of 41.2 billion won.

In benchmarking tests for long reach VDSL installation project, which was joined by Tellion, Dasan Networks, and Millinet, only Tellion successfully passed the test. Having proposed QAM specification-based equipment, Tellion will provide KT with its long reach VDSL gears in value of 30 billion won.

"KT`s new network infrastructure installation project gives a momentum to lackluster communication equipment market. The communication carrier is expected to make additional investment for network infrastructure, triggering equipment investment by competitors," said an observer.
