With the raid growth of the multimedia devices, DSP(Digital Signal Processor)`s speed competition has begun, after CPU.

Unlike CPU, DSP is based on multiple calculation and changes analog signals into digital signals. It had only 5㎒ speed in early the 1980s, but has now developed into giga speed with the spread of handsets, telecom devices, digital audio and image devices.

The industry predict that 1㎓ DSP will prompt the development of new products like home media center, as it will help recording programs of other broadcasting centers with mobile telecom devices while watching HDTV.

On May 13, Texas Instruments (TI) will start the speed competition in this field by releasing its 1㎓ DSP. TI plans to show the performance of its new product in various application examples that new high-function DSP, such as satellite watch and mobile home media center.

Before, that, TI`s competitor Analog Device(ADI) released DSP Blackpin that supports 600㎒ speed and 1.2GMACS, and said that it will also release 1㎓ DSP within this year.

ADI, which developed with Intel MSA(Micro Signal Architecture), released the first 300㎒ DSP in 2001, as well as 500㎒ and 600㎒ DSPs.

This company, however, emphasizes that ADI is designed not only for fast speed but also for processing of high-speed data like MPEG4 and H.264, and that it reduced energy consumption to 0.15㎽ per MMC, increasing the actual performance.

Related officials at two companies said, "As long as DSP`s application expands, speed competition will continue."
