T3Q, a company specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) platforms, will develop an AI mine detection system that can perform a perfect mine removal operation by the convergence of AI technology and Ground-penetration radar (GPR) technology.

T3Q (CEO Byunghoon Park) announced on the 25ththat they were recently selected as the performing organization for the 'AI Convergence Mine Detection System Development and Demonstration Project' jointly promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Ministry of National Defense and will release the technology development output at the end of this year.

As part of the interministerial AI convergence project (AI+X) project, this task uses AI technology and GPR to effectively detect various types of landmines and underground utilities buried in the DMZ, and to compensate for the weakness of existing mine detectors. It is expected to secure the safety of military personnel and the public by safely removing landmines.

Currently, it is estimated that about 830,000 landmines are buried in Korea, including the DMZ and the Civilian Control Line. It is estimated that it will take about 197 years to completely remove it. However, since most of the buried mines are made of non-metallic materials such as plastic, the existing mine detection method based on metal detection has limitations in removing mines and making it difficult to maintain safety.

T3Q plans to partner with ISUNG, a GPR manufacturing company, and BOMIN Global, a GPR exploration company to develop an AI-based mine detection system and install it on mine detectors and mine removal robots for practical use in the military.

A T3Q official said, “GPR can distinguish buried objects more accurately than metal detectors, but it has the disadvantage of having to go through the hands of an expert to read GPR images. However, we will also develop an AI mine detection system that easily analyzes GPR images with AI technology to find mines to general soldiers.”
