Korea AI Association (KORAIA) announced on Thursday that it was selected by the Seoul Metropolitan Government (Mayor Oh Se-hoon) to be in charge of ‘2021 Seoul New Deal AI Training Dataset Production Project’, which will provide support for companies with creating AI training dataset and providing experiences for the citizens of Seoul who are preparing for employment by offering them opportunities to participate in process of creating training dataset, and signed an agreement with the government at the end of last month and has begun working on the project.
Just like last year, the main purpose of the project is to provide support for companies with creating AI training dataset and job training and experience for participants through internships between the citizens of Seoul and private companies and ultimately facilitate the participants filling jobs that are related to data and AI.
The project also builds AI training datasets related to administration and opens them to the public in order to create jobs and promote South Korea’s AI industry. The project in 2020 collected texts that organized information related to videos from online and videos filmed by oneself and images and created about 17 types of training datasets for ‘people inside of a car’, ‘awareness of dogs’, ‘detection of illegal acts at the Cheonggyecheon Stream’, and others by linking the texts to related information.
Through internships between the citizens of Seoul and private companies, the project builds AI training datasets for companies and provides training in digital capabilities for participants through systematic supervision and job training.

The project is expected to last until the end of this year and it is expected to create jobs by helping participants with jobs at companies related to data and AI or helping them set up startup companies and promote and assist the AI industry.
In addition, participating companies will provide systematic supervision and education and training to interns and collect and build open datasets that can be utilized in the future through internships.
The companies will provide on-the-job training to interns so that they can be put into jobs related to their training right after they become hired and eliminate any uncertainty towards work capability and provide training that will help the interns adapt to an organization life at the same time.
Interns who complete their internship will be able to accurately evaluate their capabilities and they are able to receive additional online and offline education at a high level if they feel that they need reeducation.
Meanwhile, data industry that is seen as the ‘crude oil for future industries’ is growing at a rapid rate. Data is seen as the main keyword of the Fourth Industrial Revolution as it is the key resource that will lead cutting-edge technologies such as AI, autonomous driving, and blockchain.
In fact, it is necessary to have AI learn tens of thousands to millions of data in order to create single AI model. Companies as well as countries are involved in fierce competitions in order to become leaders in the data market according to development of AI industry.
The Seoul Metropolitan Government was able to create jobs, promote the AI industry, and produce visual results through last year’s project and received praise for creating an ecosystem and jobs for local governments and AI companies.
