Samsung Electronics announced on January 14 that it has released its 108-MP image sensor called “ISOCELL HM3”.
This image sensor is the company’s third-generation 0.8µm image sensor. The 1/1.33” ISOCELL HM3 has 108 million pixels integrated.
The ISOCELL HM3 is integrated with the company’s camera technologies such as “Smart ISO Pro” and “Super PD Plus”.
Smart ISO Pro is a HDR (High Dynamic range) technology that amplifies light through different ISO values in an environment such as the entrance of a tunnel where light and darkness are mixed and merges the ISO values. Compared to other HDR technologies, it minimizes afterimages. Smart ISO Pro also uses 12-bit color (68.7 billion colors), which provides about 64 times more colors than 10-bit color (1.07 billion colors),and provides more rich color representation.

Super PD Plus is able to detect the focal point 50% faster in dark environments and capture steady images. It also improves sensitivity up to 50% through a noise control technology that raises color gamut by combining nine adjacent pixels into one depending on the amount of light.
With an optimal design, the ISOCELL HM3 is also integrated with a technology that reduces power to operate a preview mode by about 6%.
Jang Deok-hyeon, who is the vice president of Samsung Electronics System LSI Business’s Sensor Operation team said that the ISOCELL HM3 is the fruit of Samsung Electronics’ most advanced image sensor technology that is integrated with the company’s latest camera technologies and it will become a key solution for next-generation mobile devices.
The ISOCELL HM3 is used for Samsung Electronics’ new flagship smartphone “Galaxy S21”.
