A camera and SNS application ‘Cymera’ is drawing attention as a relief pitcher for SK Communications’ globalization with its global download count exceeding 100 million.

SK Communications announced on the 16th that Cymera had exceeded an accumulated download count of 120 million across the world and that it had also recorded over 200 million downloads in Brazil, which is displaying a rapid growth, and thus became a national app in this country.

Cymera is a mobile camera app service with key features including facial image compensation and modeling using face recognition technology independently developed by SK Communications. This service was released in March 2012.

The reason Cymera’s growth is encouraging is because the number of users is increasing evenly throughout the world.

According to SK Communications, Cymera users are spread widely across the world, such as 22 million in Korea, 20 million in Brazil, 8 million in Indonesia, 7.5 million in Thailand and 7.5 million in the U.S. As more than 20 countries recorded a download count of two million or more out of the total download count of 120 million, more than 85% of Cymera downloads took place abroad.

The fact that a large number of people are using this app actively is another reason SK Communications is confident about this service.

“This service is being used by 4.5 people across the world in a day. The number of monthly active users (MAU) is as large as 25 million,” said Director Kim Gyeong-cheol of SK Communications Management Support Division. “Our goal is to increase MAU to 30 million within the year.”

SK Communications will also start profit-making business using Cymera.

“We are setting up a digital item shop in Cymera website with a goal for the shop opening in January next year,” said Director Kim. “Considering profits Kakao Talk or Line is earning with emoticon sales, Cymera’s digital item shop is expected to contribute to sales expansion.”

SK Communications also expressed an aspiration to develop Cymera as the world’s No. 1 camera app and platform by setting Brazil and South America as an advance base. “We will add a blog function to Cymera,” said Director Kim. He expressed confidence, “Cymera will solidify its position as a global SNS platform in addition to the simple camera function.”
