Monitoring and control of Samsung’s smart home appliances will be possible with the application of an Internet of things (IoT) platform ‘Smart Syncs’ commercialized in the North American market. This holds great significance as control is enabled with a universal IoT platform (hub) rather than the company’s own platform (Samsung Smart Home). This service has not yet been implemented by Samsung’s competitors, such as Google and Apple that are fighting over IoT market leadership at the moment. It is forecast that Samsung Electronics will utilize this service in its home appliances marketing and, at the same time, will embark on promoting a link with products and devices of other companies in order to secure leadership in the IoT market.

According to the industry and foreign press on the 13th, Samsung Electronics announced that it had realized monitoring and control of its home appliances, such as refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners and robot vacuum cleaners, with Smart Sync’s smart phone application (app). In the past, Samsung’s home appliances had been controlled only with an exclusive Samsung app. Smart Syncs is a gateway for connection between devices. In addition to home monitoring, Smart Syncs enables control of Samsung’s home appliances. Samsung Electronics took over Smart Syncs at $200 million (industry estimation) in August.

Smart Syncs not only provides a function to remotely control Samsung’s air conditioners, washing machines and robot vacuum cleaners, but also sends out an ‘alarm’ when the refrigerator is opened. Samsung Electronics plans to adopt a security function to check intruders through video display by using cameras and microphones attached to its robot vacuum cleaners.

The significance of this service implementation is in the fact that Samsung Electronics integrated its independently developed smart home service with IoT platform. Samsung Electronics is forecast to attempt application to other home appliances, such as TVs, and wearable devices in the future. In addition, as Smart Syncs supports open platform, Samsung Electronics will open it to other products including those from the same industry, and thus will expand the application actively.

Samsung Electronics Consumer Electronics (CE) President Yun Bu-geun asked the industry’s active participation together with an introduction of the company’s vision to realize Samsung Smart Home on the basis of an open platform through his keynote speech at the IFA 2015 ‘Realization of Future Home (Smart Home)’ held in September.

In fact, Samsung Electronics has organized and is operating an IoT group ‘Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC)’ with Intel, Dell and Cisco. In addition, it is participating in an IoT consortium ‘Thread Group’ led by Google with other members including Silicon Labs, Freescale and ARM.

Samsung’s attempt at home appliances control is forecast to give quite a stimulus to other companies that are competing against Samsung in the IoT market, such as Google and Apple. Google is accelerating its IoT business by taking over an Internet camera maker ‘DropCam’ and a smart home platform company ‘Revolve’ in June and October respectively following the acquisition of an automatic temperature controller maker Nest at $3.2 billion early this year. Apple has also disclosed its home kit platform recently and commercialized a technology for drone, electric bulb and door lock control. An industry insider explained, “Samsung’s attempt is meaningful as it opened a new chapter in the IoT field.”

According to recent data from BI Intelligence, the number of home devices connected to the Internet network from this year to 2019 will increase by an average of 67% per year, and thus will amount to 1.8 billion by 2019. These devices include smart home appliances, smart lighting, security system and energy equipments.
